Tips for Treating Dry Skin in Winter

Mandy Hill
The air is changing and the leaves are falling. Your breath begins to show because of the cold air. Winter time comes with many beautiful things, but it also has its downside. Along with the cold air from winter comes dry skin. Treating dry skin can be difficult at times. Though itchy, dry skin can also be caused by certain medical condition, chances are that your dry skin is a result of that cold, winter air mixed with the dry heat of your home or office. Let's find out how treating dry skin can be simple.

Your skin is your biggest organ. People are very careful to take care of their heart or lungs, but a lot of times the skin is left out. The first step to taking care of your skin is keeping it clean. When you shower, you should use a sponge or a gentle bath scrub to exfoliate your skin. The warm water will help soften dead or loose skin, making it easier to remove. After exfoliating, you should use a gentle body wash to be sure your skin is clean of dirt and bacteria. When you get out of your shower, you should thoroughly dry yourself with a towel while still in the warmth of your bathroom. If you go into a cool area still damp, your skin will get even drier.

Once your skin is clean, you will need to moisturize it. Today, there are hundreds of different moisturizers for all different skin types. There are even lotions aimed specifically at itchy, dry skin. In choosing a moisturizer, you should stay away from those with a high alcohol content and those that are highly fragranced. Some fragrances will irritate dry, sensitive skin. Those that have a lot of alcohol in them will actually dry your skin out more. There are all types of moisturizers available, simply sort through them and find one that works well for you. Some people even use straight petroleum jelly, though many find it too greasy. If you are looking for something a little more natural, you can also use olive oil.

It is important to understand that treating dry skin is an ongoing thing, not just an occasional treatment. By regularly exfoliating your skin and applying moisturizer, your skin will become healthy and stay that way. Treating dry skin doesn't have to be something you dread. Make it an enjoyable time to pamper yourself. Take a long, warm shower, slather on the lotion of your choice, and lay around in your bathrobe while it soaks in. You will feel refreshed and your dry skin will thank you.
