1. How do you want to feel?
How do you want your artwork to make you feel? Do you want it to inspire you, to calm you, to energize you? Knowing how you want to feel whenever you look at that art is a huge help for finding the right artwork for your home. It helped me find the perfect 'sophisticated' artwork for my living room, 'calming' artwork for my bedroom and 'inspirational' artwork for my kitchen and office. Knowing what you really want out of your artwork is truly one of the first steps.
2. Mix and match.
Do you want your artwork to match the color scheme in the room, or do you simply want to mix and match colors and palettes? Either is fine, as long as you're comfortable with your decision. If you're unsure, consider choosing artwork that is in complimentary shades when compared to your wall colors and furniture.
3. Black and white.
Can't decide on colors to go with your decor? Just, stop. Then, pick up a few black and white prints. Black and white allows you to really focus on the image itself rather than on the colors. Plus, you may feel a bit more daring in the topics of your artwork when it is in black and white.
4. Go with what you love.
If you don't love a piece of artwork, don't buy it. Just because it matches your decor does not mean it's the right choice. If you don't love the artwork, you'll just regret it even more once it's actually on your wall. Love what you choose.
5. Forget everyone else.
That being said, forget what everyone else thinks. It's your home and you're the one who has to look at the art on a daily basis, not them. Just because your mother-in-law doesn't like your vintage French poster art doesn't mean you need to get rid of it. If you love it, stick with it. No one can tell you how to decorate your home, except for you.
