If you have never played before, it can take a few minutes to get used to the game. There is a guide at the beginning that will explain everything if you don't already know. The only thing you need to know is that you should be focusing on farming and not on trees or decorations, at least not until later.
Get Money Fast:
If your goal is to get some money, then you need to plan ahead. If your leaving for 3 hours, don't plant a seed that grows in 30 minutes. You want to plant things so that they are finished after you expect to return to the computer. This way you have a buffer if you get held up somewhere.
Refer to the list below to find the best plants to make you money. Just because a plant costs more doesn't mean you will return more profit. Sometimes strawberries are the best route to go.
Best Plants for Money:
The following is a list of the the plants that have the best money per hour rate. Start at the top of the list and find the first plant you have access to on the list.
Peas
Asparagus
Onions
Grapes
Sugar Cane
Tomatoes
Sunflowers
Lillies
Ghost Chili/Acorn Squash
Green Tea
Coffee/Blackberries
Blue Berries
Carrots
Raspberries
Broccoli
Cabbage
PattyPan Squash
Lavender
Red Wheat
Yellow Melon
Peppers
Aloe Vera
Corn
Rice/Red Tulip
Pumpkin
Pineapple
Potatoes
Cranberries
Pink Roses
Strawberries
Yellow Bell
Watermelon
Cotton
Squash/Soybeans
Daffodils
Artichoke
Eggplant
Wheat
Quick Leveling:
If money is no longer an issue and you want to gain some levels fast (that is the point right?) then the best way to do this is to plow the land, plant soybeans, dig it all up at once, and then repeat. This will let you rack up experience much faster, but it does not give you any money. So be extra careful not to leave yourself broke.
Achievements:
If you need some quick cash, try to find the quickest achievement (Ribbon) you can obtain and the cash reward that goes with it. If that means planting some trees, then it may be in your best interest.
Equipment:
You will probably want to wait till around level 20 to really use this stuff. Once you reach that point though it can be very handy. It will allow you to plow, plant, or harvest 4 squares at a time rather than the normal 1.
Tablet PC:
If you have one take advantage of it. Using the stylus rather than the mouse will make plowing or harvesting a whole field take a fraction of the time it normally does.
Conclusion:
It is perfectly possible to beat all your friends at farmville and never spend a dime. Don't waste your money buying coins when you can make that money as long as you pay attention to the money/hour of each seed.
