Tips and Tricks for a Successful Family Vacation with Your Children

Cee Belair
Summer is soon upon us, and so is family vacation time. If the idea of traveling for long days with kids crammed into a car doesn't appeal to you, try these tips to make the most out of your trip, and saving some of your inner peace!

1.Plan your trip. Planning is the key to success. Where are you going? Is it to a museum? An amusement park? An art gallery? Know where you're going, and make sure it's something the whole family can enjoy.

2.Time your travel. How long is it going to take you to get there? Look at your map, go online and try to get an estimate on how long of a trip you have to plan for. Is it going to be a few hours? Or a few days? You need to know so you know what kind of things to prepare to keep everyone happy.

3.Plan your overnight stays. Are you one to pop into a motel when you get tired? You can plan and make reservations for estimated stops along your route. Keep in mind that some motels will fill up if you're headed through a highly traveled area. Keeping a reservation open for yourself is recommended. It will give you a much needed break without the stress of having to stop at every motel along the way, only to find out there are no vacancies.

4.What does the family enjoy? Take a look along your route and see what kind of attractions are there that you might all enjoy. Make sure you trade off if you want to hit the art gallery, but your kids want to see "The World's Largest Ball of Yarn." Keeping everyone happy and stress free is important to a successful trip!

5.Make your itinerary. Now that you've charted your course, have seen what's along the way for attractions, and planned your overnight stays, you can set your actual itinerary for the trip. It's all laid out. Write down from the time you are leaving, to every stop along the way and how to get there. It's a lot easier from a preplanned piece of paper than pulling out the map each time you hit near something that was on your list of things to see!

6.Make sure your vehicle is maintained. Before you set out for your trip, have your oil changed and have general maintenance done on your car. Have your favorite mechanic give it the once over and check the tires. There is nothing worse than a broken down car on the side of the highway with a bunch of screaming children. Chances are there won't be anyone around for miles to help.

7.Pack. Plan on what you need ahead of time and pick up snacks and small games for the car. You can keep your children amused with a variety of books, games and the ever-popular snack. Don't forget to pack some for yourself and your spouse! Make sure you have all your necessities as well. Don't forget the suitcase!

Most importantly, remember to have fun! Vacations are short, so enjoy the time while you have it. Roll with the punches if something comes your way that you're not prepared for. It's a family outing, meant to spend quality time with your loved ones!
