Mayonnaise has been an open secret for hair care enthusiasts for decades. You can even find recipes for conditioners online. Do a Google search for "mayo in hair," and you should get some hits. But mayonnaise can also be used just by itself. Just leave on for roughly thirty minutes and rinse well. Mayonnaise serves as a cheaper alternative to intensive hair conditioners, and should leave your hair, soft, shiny, and considerably more manageable.
If you are looking for something to soften your hair, try mixing honey with a little olive oil. The oils within are a great natural softener. Covering your head with something like a shower cap further locks the oils in and helps boost the effect. Let sit for fifteen to twenty minutes, and rinse.
Moisturizing, softening, and conditioning, eggs aren't just for breakfast anymore. Try them in your hair for a smoothing effect. Eggs also have the ability to repair damaged hair, more so than any other food product. From oil to lemon, there are many different ingredients that can be added to eggs for slightly differing results on your hair. You can find egg conditioner recipes all over the internet.
Dandruff problems and itchy scalp can be treated with the help of yogurt. It will sooth the burn of a dry scalp, and, in turn, actually rid your hair of dandruff. There are recipes available, many with essential oils, which can at least give your conditioner a great scent! Yogurt does the trick all by itself though. Just massage well into the scalp and let it sit for fifteen minutes. Rinse very well.
If you will be spending lots of time in the sun this summer, and you would like to get some light natural looking highlights, lemon juice, while an old trick, actually does work for some people. It's also not damaging, so it's worth a try for blonde highlights, before using harsher chemical products.
Essential oils, while not technically in the food category, are good for hair growth, as well as nail strength and to promote healing. Essential oils can be found in health food and vitamin stores of all kinds. Try rosemary, which is supposed to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss and graying, or lavender, which treats dry scalp and dandruff problems.
Whatever problems you have with your hair, don't just run to an expensive salon for help. The answer may be waiting right in your kitchen.
