Tips for Visiting Edinburgh, Scotland with Young Children
What to See, Where to Stay, and Where to Eat
Where to Stay
If you are staying with young children in Edinburgh, I recommend locating a self-catering accommodation. By doing this, you are able to allow your child/children to sleep in one room without having to go bed yourself. In addition, you'll have a kitchen, which makes it possible to cook for your children if they are picky eaters, or at least store milk, formula, or other snacks in a refrigerator in your own room
Another wonderful option is an aparthotel, such as The Holyrood Aparthotel. Similar to a self-catering accommodation, but with all the conveniences of a hotel, it is located just off of the historic Royal Mile. You couldn't ask for a better location for a family, at a reasonable price. By staying here, we were able to see all of the major sites of Edinburgh without getting back in a car. The location cannot be beat.
Sightseeing
Without a doubt, visitors to Edinburgh must visit Edinburgh Castle. It's possible to see almost the entire castle while pushing your stroller. In addition, you get a wonderful view of Edinburgh from the castle, which sits at the top of the Royal Mile.
Another fun option for small children is the Museum of Childhood, also located along the Royal Mile. The museum is free, and is filled with toys and games representative of different eras. You may need to leave your stroller on the first floor to explore the small building with ease, but young children will definitely enjoy looking around. There is even a small arts and crafts area to give them something to do.
Other options in Edinburgh while visiting with children include the Edinburgh Zoo, The Palace of Holyrood, Our Dynamic Earth, or an Open Top Bus Tour.
Eating Out
We found restaurants in Edinburgh to be especially accommodating of young children, providing highchairs and excellent service. Pizza Express is located on the Royal Mile, as well as many other pub style restaurants that can and will accommodate children with ease.
Simply stated, it is possible to fully see, enjoy and appreciate Edinburgh, even when traveling with young children.
