Tips for Washing and Reusing Plastic Storage Bags

Whether the current recession has hit your family hard or you are simply trying to save money, when you're pinching pennies, every little bit helps. One way you can help stretch your budget while reusing items and reducing waste is by washing and reusing plastic storage bags.

How to Wash and Reuse Plastic Storage Bags

Start by emptying each bag completely. Check each bag carefully for holes and tears. Discard any that have holes, tears or seem worn.

Fill your sink with hot, soapy water then put the bags into the water. If the plastic bags are especially dirty you should allow them to soak in the soapy water for a few minutes. Use a grease-cutting dish soap like Dawn if you've stored greasy food items in the plastic bags.

Wash the bags in the soapy water using your hands or a dish cloth. Drain the water then turn the bags inside out and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Dry the plastic bags by hanging them on an indoor clothesline or dropping the bags over large propped-up spoons or utensils.

Once the bags are thoroughly dry - both inside and outside - turn them right side out and put them away. They are now ready to use and you've saved a few extra pennies!

Miscellaneous Tips for Washing and Reusing Plastic Storage Bags

Buy heavy freezer bags as they are better for washing and reusing. I generally don't use or reuse bags that are lighter in weight than freezer bags.

Do not wash and reuse bags that have held raw or unfrozen meat or molded food. When it comes to food storage, if in doubt, throw it out.
