Tips for Washing Your Toddler's Hair

Some Toddlers Hate to Have Their Hair Washed

Most toddlers do not want to have their hair washed and for this reason the actual act of washing their hair can be extremely challenging for the both of you. My son, who is a 20 month old toddler himself, is the perfect example of a toddler who doesn't like to have his hair washed and he certainly doesn't make washing his hair very easy. However in attempts to make washing his hair more pleasant for the both of us I have been doing a number of different things and I thought that I would pass on the methods for washing a toddler's hair that I liked.

Understandably a toddler doesn't like to lay down in the tub to get their hair washed, it probably feels like they are falling and it doesn't help that their ears are getting slightly submerged underwater. However if you feel as though you don't have any other option as they are not willing to tilt their head back enough to avoid water pouring over their face or long enough for you to completely get their hair rinsed, one solution is to have your toddler wear a bath visor.

If your toddler doesn't mind laying down in the bath but they certainly mind their ears being under water washing their hair can be one of the first things that you do in the bath before it is completely full of water. Have a cup full of warm water and lay your toddler down and wet their hair, soap it up and rinse it out with them laying down, but do this before the water is high enough to get in their ears. You can get plenty of water from the running water to wet and rinse their hair and then the worst part of bath time will be over and your little one can enjoy the rest of their bath.

Something else that I have done to make the time that I am washing my toddlers hair more pleasant is to not do it during every single bath. My son takes a bath nearly every day and I find that he doesn't need his hair to be washed 6 or 7 times a week, just washing it every other bath seems to keep it plenty clean and it makes every other bath just that much more easier for the both of us. I would hate to turn bath time, something that my son loves, into something that he dreads because he associates it with getting his hair washed.

My wife just bought the I CAN KIDS dvd - i can wash my hair, that my son watches just before we wash his hair now. After 2 years of screaming and crying about washing hair we have finally found something that works. I was really surprised that he would watch a dvd and it would help him with this - not quite sure why it works but it worked so I am quite happy. Try it out if you are desperate. The website is http://www.icankids.co.uk

Thanks for your good ideas - I'd never thought of a "bath visor". Another thing I've found is that you can often get hair quite clean with just water. Sometimes we alternate between using shampoo and using water only.

I hate washing kids' hair. The screaming, the crying... And that all happens before we even enter the bathroom! Great article.
