Tips for Wearing a Short Wedding Dress

Jody Morse
Although our ideal image of a traditional wedding dress is long and flowing, some brides may prefer to wear a short dress on their special day. For a beach wedding, a short dress can even be a more ideal option. If you are planning to wear a short dress for your wedding day, there are many options available to you. Here are some tips for wearing a short wedding dress.

Choose a Respectable Wedding Dress Length

If you are planning to opt for a short wedding dress, consider opting for a tea-length gown. While some cocktail-length dresses may be appropriate, it is important to keep in mind that it is your wedding day. You do not want to choose a wedding dress which is too revealing or promiscuous. Even if you are not planning a church wedding, you will want to make a good first impression during your first hours as a married woman.

Select the Right Wedding Shoes for a Short Dress

It is important to consider what shoes you will be wearing on the day of your wedding. While shoes can remain fairly hidden when you opt for a longer wedding dress, everyone will see them if you are wearing a short dress. You will want to choose a pair of white shoes, with or without accents. Generally, most shoes which can be purchased from a bridal store are an acceptable choice. You wouldn't want to sport a pair of stilettos which look like they belong to a hooker on your wedding day.

Consider Opting for Short Bridesmaid Dresses, too

A general rule of thumb is that bridesmaid dresses should never outdo the wedding dress. Additionally, some feel that the wedding dress should be longer than the bridesmaid dresses. If you are opting for a tea-length wedding dress, consider choosing cocktail-length dresses for your bridesmaids. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is your own wedding day, so you should choose whatever dresses you think are beautiful.

Think About Carrying a Few Flowers Instead of a Bouquet

A large bouquet of flowers can take away from the beauty of a short wedding dress. Since you are opting for a simpler option, consider carrying only a few flowers instead. While the right bouquet can still be a beautiful option, carrying a few flowers can also be ideal.

Some feel that a short wedding dress is not a good because it is not traditional. If you are a non-traditional bride, however, it can be a perfect option for an outdoor wedding ceremony during the months of spring or summer. Short wedding dresses are becoming increasingly popular, which is mostly due to the economy and the fact that they are a much more affordable option. Ultimately, it is important to remember that is your wedding day, so you should wear what you want.

These are good points to keep in mind, Jody. I agree that the bridesmaids should not outdo the bride. After all, everyone's eyes should be on the beautiful bride. Amy's comment is spot on! That would be so embarrassing!

Might want to consider the proper undergarments too if you plan to do any fast dancing at the reception. Great Aunt Fanny probably doesn't want to see someone's thong ;-)
