Summer hemlines are short and sexy as a general rule. While they may seem like an easy look to pull off when you are a teenager in shorts and sandals, as you get older things can become a little more complicated. There are pitfalls to avoid by utilizing good fashion sense!

Don't wear a spiky heel with denim shorts.

Most women by their very nature wouldn't pair a dress heel or designer shoe with a pair of denim shorts unless they were on the red carpet in very expensive denim. However, it is not uncommon to see a woman wearing a sandal with a very pointed heel alongside a pair of denim short shorts. Bad idea. Such a combination usually ends up looking slightly desperate and woefully under-prepared on the fashion budget front.

If you want to elevate yourself while wearing blue jean shorts, opt for a wedge. Don't go for an extraordinarily high heel or platform. It isn't stylistically smart when your shoes have a greater surface area than your pants. The slight lift in a well-sized wedge sandal will give your legs good shape without taking away from their length.

Denim is not the end of summer shorts, and khaki is not the beginning

Department stores would have you think that summer wear should only be denim, khaki, or denim. However, if you take a close look, you will find shorts available made of linen and twill in a variety of fun fashion colors and business inspired prints. These types of shorts can be dressed up with a business style shirt or given a bit of fun with a typical t-shirt. The contrast will add a spontaneous element!

Add fun accessories to your shorts for an added edge.

Shorts can be dressed up in a variety of ways from your head to your toe to keep an outfit from being too casual. With shorts, you can dress up your upper body by specifically crafting your hair instead of leaving it hang lose. This is especially handy if you have shorter legs. The polished look of a coiffed ponytail or carefully pulled back front hair can help add length to the entire body versus loose hair.

The shirt paired with your shorts can be dressed out with necklaces layered over a full shirt or a pendant style necklace can be worn over a sculpted neckline. Suspenders also provide an interesting contrast to shorts if an appropriately matched pair is incorporated.

Shorts are a summer fashion staple, but that does not have to mean they have to be ordinary in style.
