Tips for Working with Children on Craft Projects

Patience, Patience, and well, more patience! That's it; all you need is patience to work with children on craft projects. Okay, so maybe you need a little more. While patience is a key factor, there are a few things that you can do to make it all go more smoothly. Here, you will find the top five things to do when working with children on craft projects.

#1. Get organized. Organization is one of the top tips for working with children on craft projects. By being prepared, you will be able to go step-by-step through the craft without any stress or frustration. Make sure you have your instructions, your tools, and your supplies on hand before you get started. That way, you will not have to run off and get something, or worse, quit in the middle of the project. In addition to your supplies, get your work area ready. If you will need to put down newspapers or a drop cloth to protect your table or floor, get them ready ahead of time. By properly preparing your work area, the whole project will be less stressful.

#2. Pick an age-appropriate craft. Different crafts work better with specific age groups. While a preschooler might prefer a craft with popsicle sticks, glue, and paint, a tween will enjoy a craft like creating a scrapbook page or a photo album more. Be sure to pick something that they will enjoy making. If you have a diverse age group, try to find a common ground. You may need to help the younger children with some parts, but the older children will appreciate it. Overall, the craft project should benefit the group as a whole.

#3. Plan the right amount of time. Never rush a project. This is a very important part of working with children. Younger children need a little longer to complete things. If you rush them, nothing (including the project) will turn out like you hoped. This tip is not limited to younger children though. Even older kids, particularly ones who like to get things right, will want enough time to do make their project its best. Instead of rushing, plan a time where you do not have to move on to something else, in case the project goes slowly. Still, it is a good idea (especially with older kids) to have some back-up ideas to fill the time in case everyone finishes early.

#4. Take personalities into consideration. One of the best ways to work with a child on a craft project is to take their personality into consideration. This is true for choosing the project, as well as how to approach the project. Some children like to work independently while others need a little more assistance. Some children like an easy project, but one that they can create multiple items during the course of the project. Other kids prefer one, big project that takes all their time.

#5. Have fun! If you, as an adult, can have fun working on a craft project, then there is a good chance the children you are working with will have fun too. Craft projects let children explore their creativity and be productive. Let them embrace that side of them and do not worry about anything else until the craft project is over. Any mess made can wait until later. The same is true for phone calls and laundry!

With a little thought and these ideas, working with kids on craft projects will be a breeze. Childhood passes too quickly. Every opportunity with a child to make something offers the perfect time to make a memory, both for you and the child, as well as a keepsake.

I agree, it takes patience to do crafts with a child. It is extremely fun. Take it as it comes. I enjoy sitting back and watching them be creative and offering help when needed.
