Tips For Writing A Dissertation

Dissertation Diary of a Doctoral Student

Tyler Emerson
Writing the dissertation if one of the culminating events of a doctoral student. During this phase, one's writing skills, ability to explore professional literature, design a research method, and use statistical analysis all draws together into one paper. As this is a capstone project, it deserves a great level of attention. The first chapter of this dissertation diary focused on certain initial steps students may take to prepare for the process. This next chapter shares ways that students can remain consistent and hold oneself accountable toward achieving this goal.

1. Accountability Partners

Develop a small group of classmates, no more than three, with whom you can have periodic meetings and discuss your current progress and obtain feedback. During this summer, I have met on a weekly basis with two classmates who have the same graduation timeline that I am seeking to achieve. During these meetings, we each have time allotted to provide updates about our current progress, address areas of difficulty, and to develop objectives that are to be accomplished by the next meeting. This group has been beneficial as it allows for objective feedback, supportive discussion, and an audience to whom the dissertation proposal defense can be presented for practice and critique.

2. Alumni

Seek out and make contact with those who have successfully completed the dissertation process. Based on this person's availability, he or she may welcome your questions about the process, the best research methods to use, and also introduce areas of consideration that you may have overlooked. In seeking the help of alumni, be sure to show a level of respect for his or her schedule and most certainly express your gratitude for the support.

3. Small Steps

Be sure to give a certain level of attention to your dissertation each day. This can be as little as fifteen minutes towards accomplishing a task on your to-do list. If a daily schedule is not feasible due to work or family responsibilities, possibly schedule a couple days a week with an hour or an hour and a half to work on tasks toward your project. Overall, every bit counts so determine what would be appropriate for your schedule.

As you launch into this final phase of your doctoral education, it is important to remain consistent in order to attain your graduation goal. Therefore, identifying ways that may help you stay focused can be extremely beneficial.

Great suggestions. I like the idea of creating community. Note the typo in the first sentence. Change "if" to is.

    The best,
