Tips to Use Your Writing to Help Others

Julia Bodeeb
While many people choose to do something other than their normal work when they volunteer, for some writers a fun way to volunteer is to write "good deed" articles and then donate to charity any profits the articles earn.

I published an article yesterday evening about an open crime investigation. I was pleased to see this morning that it already has over 2,500 page views. It made me feel great that my writing gives people a way to learn more about the investigation. I put the FBI's "missing person" page link on the article, so a lot of people saw it.

Writing has a lot of power. When writers use their writing talent to do good deeds it can help other people tremendously. So find a way to use your writing to help others. It will give you a great feeling.

Write about Shoddy Products

An informative article about a food, drug or product recall could help people avoid using a dangerous product. It could also save them from wasting money on a product that is not effective. Product reviews some times save lives. If there is a recall of a product due to contamination that could be deadly if ingested it is always helpful to publish about that topic to spread the news of the danger.

Write about Scholarships

There are a lot of scholarships available and researching them takes a lot of time. Thus, if you hear of a great, new scholarship, write about it to get the word out about its existence. Especially now, when finances are tight for so many families, scholarships make a world of difference in helping kids to get an education.

Crime Writing

Write about open murder or missing child investigations. Who knows a reader may see the article and decide to call the police with some important information. Or they may see a photo of the child with the article and realize that they see that kid all the time and can tell the police where the child is.

Write about Non-Profit Organizations

There are so many non-profit organizations in this world doing charity work. They need all the publicity they can get to raise funding and get volunteers. So if you hear about a non-profit doing great work to help humanity write an article about the organization. Tell readers what the group does to help others and how they can join in as volunteers or by donating money to keep the non-profit going. You could even drop by or call the manager of the non-profit and ask to do an interview.

Publicize Fund Raisers or Blood Drives

If an organization is holding a fund raiser for an important cause or holding a blood drive to help save lives, publicizing the cause with your writing is a good deed. Taking the time to spread the word via publishing an article will help the event attract more attendees. So check out the "events" section of a local newspaper to find out about upcoming charity events and cover them with an article.

Take Action When a Crisis Arises

When natural disasters strike, like the hurricane Katrina in New Orleans or the earthquake in Haiti, it is very helpful to publish articles about how to reach out and help the survivors of the disasters. The more quickly the article is published after the disaster the more helpful it will be, so take quick action to research what groups are helping with recovery and write about how to volunteer or donate to them.

Write about T-Shirts

A lot of people feel they can never have too many t-shirts. Thus a lot of non-profit groups use t-shirt sales to raise funds to do charity work. So if you see an ad for a t-shirt sale to help a non-profit, write an article about it and spread the word of the cute new t-shirt available. For example, here's a link to a t-shirt for sale to help the Gulf Coast (go HERE).
