Tips to Writing Short Stories About Spiritual Care

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Spiritual care is defined as the meeting of an individual's religious needs through pastoral services, like that of prayer and counseling. It is a non-denominational type of counseling that benefits those of any religion or spiritual belief. Spiritual care is administered through churches, hospitals and/or other avenues. Writing short stories for their own spiritual care can give a person without access to this type of care a better sense of well-being. When these stories are shared with other their inspiration can do wonders.

Start of by sitting down in a quiet place and thinking of what it is that drives you spiritually. This can be anything; nature, gods and/or goddesses, a book (like the bible or even a self-help book), family and friends or anything else that helps you to feel peace, calm and spiritual. Write about what you feel and how these things or people have "cared" for your spiritual needs, whether it be for health, sanity or just getting through each day.

If it is nature that has helped with your spiritual care you can write a short story about meditation out in the open park, or in a field, or in the woods. Include the words you use in your meditation. Write about the breeze lightly blowing away your cares and your pain, the sun warming your cold and tired bones. Let the feelings of nature inspire your health and wellness, and your story.

If it is a being that has manifested your spirituality you can write a short story that includes a prayer to them, or just write about how it is that their presence in your heart and mind has helped you. For instance, the Hindu God Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, so maybe while praying to him some problems you had were removed and you were able to move on, like cancer gone into remission.

Get a bible, and books from other religions, and start writing. Think healing and positive thoughts and include them in your short stories. Write prayers and mantras that you have used in your healing. Maybe these short stories will aid someone else in their own spiritual care some day.
