Vampire-themed love stories are an incredibly popular fiction genre these days. Perhaps you're a fan of Stephanie Myers' Twilight Series or simple enjoy vampire lore, and you have an idea for creating your own vampire characters. Give these ideas life by writing your own vampire romance book or short story. Follow these tips for writing a vampire romance story and you may see your book on a bookstore shelf, if that's your ultimate goal. Additionally, these tips can be applied to those who are writing a story for their own enjoyment.

How to Write a Vampire Romance Novel Tip #1: Learn about vampires

This may seem obvious, but if you're going to write a novel about vampires, you need to know everything there is to know about vampires. This doesn't mean you should re-read your Twilight books. Twilight isn't the be-all, end-all of vampire books. You need to learn about traditional vampires as well-think cruel, bloodsucking demons. Vampires aren't just sexy shirtless men looking for cute human girls to befriend. They can be evil characters as well.

How to Write a Vampire Romance Novel Tip #2: Understand the Vampire Romance Genre

If you're interested in writing a vampire love story, you probably have already read many of the popular books in this genre. Write a list of what you liked/disliked about each novel and incorporate your preferences in your novel.

How to Write a Vampire Romance Novel Tip #3: Get to know your characters

Get a set of index cards and write the name of each character on separate cards. On each card, write the character's physical description, likes/dislikes, motivation, a past, goals, and anything else you think is relevant. You'll also need to decide who is your protagonist (typically, this is a female character who falls for a male vampire, but remember, the novel is YOURS to write, so feel free to change this as you wish), antagonist (typically a vampire hunter or another vampire or human who wants to keep the two apart).

How to Write a Vampire Romance Novel Tip #4: Design a plot

Vampire romance novels revolve around a forbidden romance plot. If you're looking to sell your vampire romance novel to publishers, you may want to stay away from clichés, such as using two high school students (one human, one vampire) or any other common plot lines. Publishers aren't really looking for a Twilight clone. You'll need to add a twist or use another angle if you wish to be published. On the other hand, if you're just writing your vampire love story for yourself or friends, go ahead and use as many clichés as you wish.

How to Write a Vampire Romance Novel Tip #5: Write!

When writing, generously add sizzling, sensual language and dialogue between characters. Readers of the vampire romance genre expect hot, steamy love scenes-don't let them down! Try to end each chapter on a cliffhanger to you're your readers hooked and turning the pages. Also, keep to a writing schedule-set aside some time each day to work on your novel, even if it's for only 20 minutes. Write in a secluded room in the house to keep you focused.
