Tired of Buying Cat Litter? Use These Tips to Teach Your Cat to Use the Toilet

Steps to Train Your Cat to Use the Toilet

Karen Curley
Following a few training tips and having patience will help you toilet train your cat. If your cat makes a mistake, you're probably moving too fast. Repeat the previous step until your cat is back on track. Remember, patience is the key to your cat's success.

Here's how to begin:

1. Always have the toilet lid and bathroom door open. Your cat needs to get into the bathroom whenever he needs to use the toilet.

2. Put the litter box next to the toilet. Show your cat where the box is and let him use it there for about a week.

3. Raise the litter box off the floor about an inch or two by placing something solid under it. Make sure the litter box doesn't wobble and let the cat use it like this for another week.

4. Repeat the third step, raising the litter box by another inch or two. Follow steps three and four until the litter box is level with the toilet seat.

5. Measure the toilet seat opening and find a bowl that will fit into the toilet. Make sure it has side handles or a lip that will hold your cat's weight. Set it aside until step seven.

6. Place the litter box directly on the toilet and let your cat use it on top of the toilet for a few days.

7. This step takes extra work on your part. Remove the litter box and hang the bowl from the toilet seat. Put some litter into the bowl. Your cat will start using it as the litter box. Empty the bowl each time your cat uses it.

8. If your cat puts his feet into the bowl, lift the paws onto the seat of the toilet. Position the cat's feet with his front legs on the seat in front of him and the back legs on either side.

9. Remove the litter and put some water into the bowl. Gradually increase the water until your cat is comfortable with the splashing sound. Do this for about a week.

10. When you feel your cat is ready, take the bowl away. Congratulations, your cat is now trained to use the toilet.

@Emma - Don't ever teach the cat to flush. Unless you want a really high water bill. The cat will flush constantly just to watch the water go down. It's cute, but expensive, trust me on this.
