Tired of Your Local Radio Stations? Why You Should Subscribe to Satellite Radio

Jason Elliot
I've had satellite radio for the past 2 years now, and would never even think about listening to traditional radio ever again. Once you become a satellite radio subscriber, you'll completely understand why. This article will educate you about the advantages of subscribing to satellite radio.

The most glaring advantage to choosing satellite radio over traditional radio is the noticeable lack of commercial breaks. With traditional radio, the advertisers are the ones who provide the revenue for the radio station. A satellite radio station, earns their revenue through the fees paid by the subscribers. Another advantage satellite radio has over traditional radio stations, are the amount of stations available.

You can find 170 stations on satellite radio, as opposed to a fraction of that amount in traditional radio stations. With traditional radio, your location may determine the type of stations available to you. With satellite radio, you are not restricted by location to the type of stations available. You'll be able to find a station that has any type of music you want to listen to. You'll be able to listen to mainstream Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, Metal, Country, Classical, Blues, Opera, many, many, more.

Another advantage satellite radio has over traditional radio stations is the lack of static. Satellite radio comes in crystal clear, no matter where you are. With regular radio stations that isn't the case. If you go into a valley or the mountains or even out of reach of the station's broadcasting capacity, you're going to get a lot of static mixed in with your music. That is, if you're lucky enough to hear any music over the static at all.

Another benefit to having satellite radio is the information you receive about the programming transmitted to the tuner. For example, have you ever been listening to the radio and hear a song, but can't remember what the title is or who the artist is? So, you wait intently until the DJ comes back on the air hoping he tells you what the song titles and artists were that were played. Sometimes he'll say, sometimes he doesn't. When the disc jockey doesn't announce the title or artist it can be pretty frustrating. However, with satellite radio, you'll never have that problem again. The receiver actually displays the song title, artist, radio program, and radio channel.

Depending on how you feel about explicit language the following could be an advantage or disadvantage. Satellite radio is uncensored. One of the more well-known people who moved to satellite radio, because of this, is Howard Stern. A lot of music is edited for the radio. With satellite radio, you'll get the full, unedited, version. Again, depending on the type of music or radio programming you listen to, this can be an advantage or a disadvantage.

You can also find local weather and traffic conditions on a satellite radio station. You'll get very in depth, up to the date information. If you happen to live in a big city, this can be invaluable. You can also get up to the minute news with satellite radio as well.

Another advantage subscribing to satellite radio has is the reliability it carries. If there were a major natural disaster, or any other type of disaster, traditional radio stations may be affected. However, satellite radio will continue to operate.

Another great feature of satellite radio is for an extra monthly fee, you can tune in at your computer. You'll be able to catch all your favorite programs while typing away. Music can make you more productive. However, commercial breaks on regular radio can become distracting and break your flow while you're typing. With satellite radio pumping through your computer speakers, you won't have that problem.

As you can see, satellite radio runs circles over traditional radio stations. If the cost of the subscription is what is holding you back because you figure regular radio is free, you need to re-examine your belief. Traditional radio really isn't free. If you sit down with a paper and pad and keep track of actual music time compared to time spent on advertisements, you'd be quite surprised. When they go to a commercial break, you have to listen to 5+ minutes of ads before you can hear any music again.

Subscription rates to satellite radio are extremely reasonable. At the time of this writing, you'll pay an activation fee of around $15, but then it's only $12.95 a month. You get crystal clear reception, whatever kind of music or programs you want to listen to, and best of all, commercial free music.

Initially, I got satellite radio because I had a job that I had to commute a long way to. I had to leave early in the morning. Quite frankly, those "zany" morning shows drove me nuts. I was tired, I was cranky, and to top it off I was on my way to a job I didn't like very much. I just wanted to listen to some music, not some moronic antics of a bunch of idiot Disc Jockeys who were constantly taking station breaks. This is what put me over the edge, and caused me to look into satellite radio. As I said above, I'm glad I did.

If you also travel a lot, you will also be glad you subscribed to satellite radio. As mentioned briefly above, even if you have a favorite station, if you travel a long way, you'll probably be out of range. Then you have to flip around channels to find a station that is of equal or better value to you. With satellite radio, you don't have to worry about that. You can travel across the whole country and listen to the same satellite radio station the entire way.

I highly recommend you subscribe to satellite radio. It costs so little, but what you get in return is huge.
