Tissue Box Photo Collage, Great Handmade Present For Sick Friend or Gag Gift for Hypochondriac

Lori Voth
A great arts and crafts project that truly shows a friend or loved one you are thinking of them is the Tissue Box photo collage. This is a perfect, lighthearted handmade present for someone with the flu, or better yet, a gag gift for hypochondriacs! And it's simple to make. Any old tissue box (full of tissues, of course!) will do, but the refillable porcelain or plastic ones tend to be more sturdy and look the most attractive. They also typically last longer than the boxes made of cardboard and can withstand any accidental sprites' of water from nearby faucets or runaway sneezes (maybe gross, but am I wrong?!) So here are the basic steps to constructing your handmade present for someone with the flu or gag gift for hypochondriacs. I will leave them vague so as to open the doors to personalization through your own imagination.

1. Purchase one of those porcelain or plastic refillable tissue boxes from your local pharmacy, or all purpose stores like Target, Wal-Mart, etc. You may even be able to find one real cheap at a Dollar Store close to home. Select one with a nice color and/or texture as some of this will be visible on the completed project.

2. Set aside or buy some heavy duty glue, whichever brand you prefer. Depending on your budget and your expected lifespan of the tissue box photo collage present or gag gift, you may want to seek out special glue or double sided adhesive tape that is acid free. This option works well when using photographs that you desire to keep in good condition over time.

3. Go through old photographs and put a group aside that fits into an appropriate theme. For instance, if you are making the tissue box photo collage project for your sick grandmother, pictures of you and her having fun doing various activities would be a great bunch of related pictures to use. Or, you could focus solely on the recipient of your gift and for the purpose of cheering them up and making them smile, collect photographs of objects and captured memories that are special to them. In the case of a gag gift for a hypochondriac friend, consider pictures of bugs or dirt, or people coughing. Only proceed with this option, of course, if your hypochondriac friend would find it amusing too. I wouldn't give the hypochondriac gag gift to a germaphobe who finds their fear of getting sick embarrassing or shameful. This tissue box photo collage might hurt his or her feelings and the idea is to simply make a loved one smile or give them a chuckle for the day.

4. This next idea is an optional addition to your tissue box photo collage if you really want to spice it up but the box will still look great, surely, without it. However, if you have the time and resources to go all out, consider cutting out quotes and sayings, or even pretty pictures like flowers or butterflies, etc (happy things) that might inspire the recipient of the tissue photo box. Or depending on the personality and sense of humor of your hypochondriac friend, select images for the gag gift that a germaphobe might find grotesque or spine tickling and not in a good way. These should be selected to compliment the photos you choose to use. And I shall reiterate again, please proceed with this project in simple good humor if you are designing it for the hypochondriac friend.

5. Finally, once you have your photos and images picked out, the fun part takes place. That is, the arrangement of the images artistically and creatively on the photo box. You will be applying each cutout with whichever glue or tape substance you've decided to purchase. Some people have the tendency to cover the entire tissue box in images, but experience has indicated that results are most often the best if the photos and cutouts are simply placed either in random or strategic patterns upon parts of the box, while leaving space between them to show the actual tissue box color and pattern behind it. This breaks up the collage a bit and keeps the project from looking to chaotic and busy. One idea is to cut the photos out in various shapes: Hearts, Squares, Circles, Triangles Etc and place them around the box, with the quotes or magazine images circling around them. Another idea is to choose just one shape, for instance a heart and cut out all of your photos as such. Then your tissue photo box will be a neat arrangement of nostalgic and hopefully uplifting heart patterns for your friend, loved one or favorite hypochondriac to look at when needing a good emotional lift.

It's really up to your personal preference the way you design your tissue box photo collage handmade gift. Look at your resources available to you and consider the desires and interests of the person you are making it for. That should help you choose. But the tissue box photo collage project is designed to be a quick, simple one that is fun to do and stress free to plan. It should only take a couple hours at most. It's a fun project for a rainy or snowy afternoon, or downtime from schoolwork and studying.

Want to make a handmade tissue box photo collage but not sure who to give it to? Have all your hypochondriac friends lost your number ever since the last time you tried to hand make them a gag gift of this sort? A personalized Tissue Box photo collage is the perfect gift for anyone, but it seems to go over especially well as a token of "wishing you well" for a friend or family member who may be coming down with a seasonal flu, or someone who unfortunately needs to spend a few days in the hospital. Or even still, make one for a buddy on your athletic team who had the recent mishap of breaking a leg or twisting an ankle. Of course, the occasion for this tissue box does not have to be so unfortunate as these situations, but let's face it, everyone likes a little symbol of love and kindness when feeling down. And they also are the most likely people to use a large amount of tissues. So this way you know the present will get good use.
