Titanic Prepares to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

A Wedding to Remember

Michele Starkey

Anniversaries are usually happy events but the sinking of the Titanic, soon to celebrate the 100th anniversary, can hardly be an uplifting event. Enter the "Back to Titanic 100th Year Tour Ireland Sweepstakes" and all of the wonderful events surrounding this anniversary.

The Royal Wedding

On Aug. 1, 2011, soon-to-wed couples will have the chance to exchange their wedding vows on the steps of the Grand Staircase of the Titanic. It is a part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. According to the museum website, "Titanic Museum Attractions Will Give Away Six 11-Day Trips for Two to Belfast, Ireland." You can visit the website here. If you have ever dreamed of a Royal Wedding this may be the closest that you could ever come and in fact the Museum is calling it the "Royal Wedding Contest" with the winners selected via online voting.

As we approach this 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, I'm not so sure that if I were a bride that this would be the location I'd choose to exchange my vows. Royal wedding or not with the history behind the Titanic, I wouldn't want my marriage to take a dive.

Back to Titanic Sweepstakes

The Titanic Museum Attractions will also be giving away six 11-day trips for two to Belfast, Ireland. The sweepstakes began June 13 and the winners will be announced on Valentine's Day in 2012. You can visit www.TitanicAttraction.com and enter daily.

The Rose Memorial

According to the Titanic Museum website, each guest who visits the museum to will be allowed to deposit a single rose petal into a container in the Memorial Gallery. Then on April 15, 2012 (the 100th anniversary date) each of the rose petals will be carefully laid onto the surface of the Atlantic Ocean directly where the Titanic sank.

Tony Payne, another Yahoo! contributor, told us about an upcoming Titanic mini-series and you can read that here.

Divers discovered a new bacterium in 2010 that made the new species discovery list. It is called, "Halomonas titanicae" and it is a new species of iron-oxide consuming bacteria that is poised to completely consume what is left of the remains of the Titanic. You can read about the new species of bacteria here on CNN. As we approach this very solemn anniversary, it appears that attempts are being made to remember the grandeur of one of the most luxurious liners of all time. Some of these planned events are just plain creepy. Titanic is a big, undersea graveyard, not a cause for celebration. Thanks for this report.

Celebrate? A funny choice of words... But the Titanic is deservedly famous in history. Not because of the supreme haughtiness of humans, imagining a work of their's was unsinkable. Not because of the number of those who died. But because of the incredible changing of fortunes that took place as a result. Truly this changed the world of U.S. Finance. Oh--although I have no family member that was on the Titanic, I do have a family connection to the Widener family that were onboard. See my article on genealogical "strings." (no, not G-strings)
