Titleist has come out with 2 new fairway designs this season and in this review I will be going over the Titleist 909F2.
The Titleist 909F2 fairway wood features a longer, more shallow face for ease of getting the ball airborne with high launch and low spin characteristics. It's a great choice for those who like a clean looking fairway wood that will help them get the ball up in the air and down the fairway.
The head shape is a very traditional look with a very deep center of gravity which not only helps get the ball up, but also makes the club head more solid and stable at impact. This is a great match to the 909D Comp and 909D2 drivers in terms of playability and forgiveness.
Like other Titleist fairway woods of the past, it is a cast head with a high strength steel face insert for more distance. While I have stated in previous reviews that I prefer the "cup face" design being used by other manufacturers, Titleist is still moving forward by allowing a face insert to achieve a little more pop at impact, even if it is only at the very center of the clubface, and after all, who misses the dead center of a club right?
The sole of the club is designed to reduce the clubs chances of getting caught up when it impacts the ground, and is equally easy to hit from the fairway or rough. Like their drives for 2009 an custom weight screw at the rear of the club allows for you to order just about any custom shaft and have it be matched perfectly to the club head.
Setting this club down really does inspire a lot of confidence at address. It's great looks and shallow face leaves no doubt that you can hammer this thing into a par 5 time and time again! While the club is designed to get the ball airborne, which it does, it is not a high ballooning flight. Instead it is a very piercing trajectory that stays in the air for a long time and still manages to land soft on the greens.
The 909F2 is also great off the tee, and workable in any direction you can shape a shot. This is truly a players club with game improvement features, so if you are looking for a new fairway wood this season, I suggest giving this club a try! With so many good fairway woods out there, you might be surprised that the best looking one also performs the best!
I'll be back with my review of the Titleist 909F3 fairway wood soon!
Stay Tuned!!
