Titleist 909H Hybrid Review

MikeBabjak
Titleist has never made a very good hybrid for my tastes. The look, feel, ball flight has never done anything for me. But as I like to be able to review things and love hitting new clubs, I thought I would give their 2009 version a try.

The Titleist 909H Hybrid is a players hybrid first and foremost. It is not as easy to get airborne as others out there in the market, but has it's merits for the better player, and is a step above the 585H of last season.

The 909H has a very clean and classic look, like all Titleist clubs, (except for the god ugly 907D1) and has a low center of gravity like most hybrids to be able to get the ball in the air more easily than you could with a 2 or 3 or 4 iron. The 909H also features a longer face, again to help with getting the ball airborne as well as giving the player a little more room to put the club on the face!

Titleist has also incorporated their SureFit weight screw as in their drivers and fairway woods to balance the club in a positive way, no matter which of their many custom shafts you choose to have installed.

Now, the bad news. While it looks great, it's not what a hybrid should be in my book. First of all I found it hard to hit the ball higher than my 2 or 3 irons with this club. I also dislike the longer length and face insert. The point of a hybrid should be to replace longer clubs. Thus, making them play as long, but simply being able to get the ball airborne more easily. I hit my 2 iron 220 yards, I hit the 2 iron equivalent of the 909H 230 yards. What's wrong with more distance you ask? Nothing at all, but if I'm going to hit a hybrid 230 yards and my 3 iron the same 200 yards, that's creating too much of a distance gap for my liking. I feel the hybrid clubs only purpose is to create a more positive ball flight and not hit the ball like a fairway wood.

That said, It's easily workable for a hybrid, looks better than last years model, and does have a good solid feel.

I would suggest this, but with caution. I would tinker with different lengths and loft and shaft combinations to make sure the hybrid is going to compliment your current iron set, not outshine it or out distance it.

That's all for my 2009 Titleist reviews folks! Hope you enjoyed them and stay tuned for more reviews!
