Until recently, shoppers looking for a selection of budget friendly clothes and accessories didn't have many options in the Hudson area.

Bargain hunters could haunt Hudson's consignment stores and resale shops looking for deals on clothing, or hunt for sales at the local Peebles department store. That all changed with the grand opening of the new TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York in fall 2010, followed by the spring 2011 opening of Kohl's department store in Hudson.

Suddenly, Hudson bargain hunters had options, and they didn't have to hop the train into Manhattan or drive all the way up to Albany or down to Poughkeepsie for deals on clothing and accessories. Both Kohl's and the TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York offer a nice selection of well-priced women's clothing; however, after doing some comparison shopping at both department stores, I'm partial to TJ Maxx.

I'm a mature woman, and though I am drawn to designer brands I don't consider myself a "fashionista," so I thought the new TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York wouldn't be my cup of tea. I couldn't have been more wrong! TJ Maxx is conveniently located in the Greenport Commons Shopping Center in Hudson, a short drive from the city's main shopping area, called Warren Street. The store is easy to get to and even on crowded summer and holiday weekends, the shopping center offers plenty of free parking.

On my first visit to the TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York right after the grand opening in October 2010, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the racks and racks of merchandise and I didn't end up buying anything. It took me a while to look over the dizzying array of clothing and accessories, but I was impressed by the inviting layout and pleasant shopping atmosphere in the store. The employees at the local TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York are friendly but not overly intrusive, and the store appears clean and well organized.

After several recent visits to TJ Maxx, I finally made some purchases over Memorial Day weekend 2011. My budget friendly summer fashion finds at the TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York include: a summery green cotton peasant blouse by Indian designer Chaudry for only $16.99 (compared to the retail price of $34); a lovely turquoise print Vasna Desire sundress for $29.99 (retail price on the hang tag listed at $76) and a powder blue sleeveless top by August Silk for $16.99 (compared to the suggested retail price of $48).

TJ Maxx is a huge discount retailer of designer and name brand clothing and accessories, and at my local TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York I've spotted designer labels like DKNY, Maxstudio, Cynthia Rowley, Calvin Klein, Chaudry, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Willi Smith. You can find men's, women's and children's clothing and accessories at TJ Maxx, as well as gifts, jewelry, home furnishings and beauty products.

Shopping at TJ Maxx can be like a treasure hunt, sifting through the masses of all types of clothing to find an incredible deal on your favorite designer or brand. A small percentage of store items are from last season or contain minor flaws or irregularities; check clothing before purchasing, but most of the items I've seen at TJ Maxx did not have noticeable flaws.

My local TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York has a nice assortment of designer handbags but I wasn't as impressed with the shoe selection. It can also be incredibly frustrating to fall in love with an amazing summer fashion bargain, only to realize that the TJ Maxx store doesn't have the item in your size. The store regularly receives new merchandise; however, they may not offer every size for a certain item. That's one of the drawbacks of my local TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York, but it's hard to complain about a store that offers Maxstudio jersey sundresses at only $29.99 (instead of the $98 retail price!)

The other department stores in Hudson, like Peebles and Kohl's, offer large selections of brands such as Izod at Peebles, Vera Wang for Kohl's, and Lauren Conrad for Kohl's, but there is something truly distinctive about the clothes I purchase from TJ Maxx in Hudson, New York. I really appreciate the unique merchandise at TJ Maxx, and after shopping at this store, I never feel like I see myself coming and going.
