TNA and NWA in the Congress Hearing on Drug Use in Professional Wrestling

Bruce Bostwick
If it's not enough that the WWE will have to go through the Congress hearings, there is also TNA and at this moment the NWA as well will have to speak before in the hearings on the drug policy. While it is clear that the WWE has one, it is quite unknown what TNA and the NWA has exactly in their policy. To better understand the situation, it would be wise to look at each area one at a time.

The NWA at this moment is just a name with multiple promotions around the world with control over the main top titles like the World and Tag Team Titles to name a few. It used to be a big deal but it faded out once WCW decided to become its own entity. From that point forward, it was simply just a name tacked on by various independent promotions to give themselves some serious credibility. It is going to be very hard to actually explain what or how they are going to do a drug policy. Each of the small promotions may have some policy but really unknown as to how it is being taken care of exactly. Looking at the activity, the only thing going on is there is a tournament to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion and that's about it. It's more or less just a paper promotion with no real organization as to the head of all of those independent promotions. In conclusion, it will be rather interesting to find out exactly how they will testify in Congress over the drug policy if there is one.

TNA was once a member of the NWA until 2004 but had the rights for the NWA World and Tag Team Titles until May of 2007. The drug policy is quite unknown due to it not being made public. According to Matt Bentley, whom recently departed from the company, stated that he had never been tested. With that type of testimony, it would really get Congress on TNA like there's no tomorrow. Could that mean the end of the company? Perhaps it could and perhaps they will be given a deadline as to get a policy started. At this present time, Panda Energy currently backs them so maybe it's a corporate policy that isn't quite known and effects the wrestlers. Maybe it does but it's not really one of those items that known.

As it is common knowledge, WWE is right now under investigation and the government could get involved and can change wrestling for an eternity. Depending on how they respond will be something but it will not just be them. It could be the fate of all promotions as well on how they conduct business. If there is nothing to hide, then there should be no trouble at all. One of the biggest questions will be how do they handle top guys being suspended exactly.

Getting back to the NWA and TNA being summoned, it will be interesting how that will actually play out, especially with the NWA. There is no one promotion so are they going to get every promoter that uses the NWA name? Only time will tell and the industry most certainly will be feeling this effect for quite sometime.

Note: At the time of writing, there was no NWA Champion but now there is. The champion is Adam Pierce, defeating Brent Albright aka the former Gunner Scott from the WWE. It was originally intended to be Bryan Danielson but he was unable to compete due to injury.

  • There is no known drug policy within the NWA.
  • TNA is owned by a private thus not releasing information about it.
The NWA used to be huge but now it is just a bunch of independent promotions.

TNA used to be a member of the National Wrestling Alliance until 2004.
