To Catch the Soul of a Smile

April Higney
I'm tired of chasing rainbows to find sunlight
through storm clouds that never seem to be breaking,
fighting the lightning strikes that burn up my heart,
only reaching the colors to find them ever-fading.

I'm tired of chasing dreams of the life that is longed for,
through visions of what I've expected love to be,
fighting the coldness, disregarding my heart,
in the face of a saddened reality.

I'm tired of chasing rivers that only flow downstream,
through forests of downed trees blocking my way,
with no way of turning around, losing ground.
I'm tired of chasing the soul of a smile each day.

I'm tired of chasing rainbows to find sunlight,
I'm tired of chasing dreams of the life that is longed for.
Storm clouds never breaking,
colors ever-fading,
in the face of a saddened reality, needing more.

I still somehow see,
rainbows will find sunlight
storm clouds will break,
colors will return,
rivers that run right beside me,
through the visions of what I've expected love could be,
dreams of the life that is longed for could still be a reality,
in the wake.

Grasping hold of the sunlight beyond just the rainbows,
through the storm clouds passing, now breaking,
climbing over the downed trees that once blocked the way,
catching the soul of a smile, for reality to catch the dream,
embracing with mind, heart, and in this soul's needed awakening.
