In the Sierra cold
I burned your poem
to light a fire.
It blazed hot enough
to kindle dead twigs
I found in the freezing dusk.
All night I gathered small wood
to keep the fire and myself alive.
I'm sorry I had to burn it,
but believe me, I know
why you wrote your poem.
