I bought all the ingredients, and got everything ready, so that when I began the pies, I could just open the jars, and pour the filling in the pie shell and then bake. Wa La!!! I would be done in no time.
So, I opened the can of pumpkin, and but all the ingredients into the bowl. Well, i thought about it and put the milk and eggs in the bowl and then decided to boil the jars, so they would be nice and clean. Then I poured the filling into the jars, and put the jars that I was going to use in a few days, right in my food cabinet.
While we were sitting there I was so proud of myself for making it a few days ahead. Now it was only a few days ahead, on my days off. Well suddenly, There was a big noise and we were alarmed. We couldn't see anything. But we checked in the closets and everywhere else but didn't see anything. Then I got up to get dinner, and opened the cabinet where the pumpkin was kept and there was glass everywhere, plus there was pumpkin everywhere., Even on the bottom of my silverware tray. Pumpkin smelled so bad and we were a long time cleaning up the mess. But because they were wood cabinets, the smell was still in the cabinet for years later. Every time you opened the drawer you could smell the pumpkin. We moved a few years later, and to this day , I guess there is still the smell of pumpkin in the cabinet.
Moral of the story:
Never can milk or eggs, and if possible, go to the store and make it exactly the day you need it. Less a worse thing happen! I have never canned anything since, and i can't be talked into it either.
That is the reason why we have cheese cake on thanksgiving, and just recently i have started making my own pumpkin pies. But not without remembering, what happened the day, I was trying to save time.
THE END
