To My Valentine

Love is ..

Debbie Dunn
Love is hurting as the other hurts,

- feeling happy as the other is happy,

- feeling indignant as the other is being put down.

Love is feeling together.

Love is growing together,

- little by little,

- day by day.

Love is not making demands on each other.

Love is a kiss that warms and strengthens you

on a freezing cold winter's night.

Love is accepting each other as they are

and not trying to change the other one

or even wanting to.

Love is being proud of somebody

- no matter what.

Love is giving freely of yourself.

Love is never being able to get a certain person

off your mind.

Love is not being afraid to show you do love

when others are around.

Love is saying the words "I love you!"

and meaning them with all your heart.

Love is knowing that that person

would never do anything to embarrass you.

Love is trusting somebody so completely

that you know they will never do anything

that would hurt you in any way.

Love is endless and everlasting and forever.

  • What is love?
  • What are all the ways we can describe our feelings of love for the one we love?
  • What is love to you?
I wrote this when I was fifteen to my high school senior boyfriend. Much of what I wrote 35 years ago is still true today.

I see you also have a strong reaction to this poem. I actually wrote this poem over 3 decades ago when I was a teenager. At the time, I had no idea what real love was. I was one of those who was more "in love" with my idea of what I thought love should be. Life has since taught me a more realistic view of love. Have a wonderful day. Best wishes to you now and in the future, Debbie Dunn
