Traditional businesses have always had a code of ethics that they followed, whether it was the company mission statement or more specific protocols. As time passed, and business structures themselves changed, these ethical codes changed and nearly became non-existent. More recently, businesses have begun to re-examine their ethics, choosing to re-stress the importance of ethical behavior for both employees and employers. This article will provide some of the most basic and most common business ethics that you can apply to your business.

Ethic #1: Be honest in everything that you do. It is important to instill honesty in your employees by leading through your own examples. You using honesty in all tasks that you undertake give you immeasurable advantages over the many companies that still practice dishonest tendencies.

Ethic #2: Your main code of conduct should be that of respect. You should show respect for everyone that you come in contact with on a regular basis. This can be applied to employees and customers. Even if you face the reality that someone you are dealing with does not return the respect, you should still maintain the same levels of respect.

Ethic #3: Do not hide important information. In your business practices, you must make sure that you provide all information that is applicable to certain situations. For example, if you are printing an informative advertisement for a product, do not hide information in super fine print. If there are warnings or disclaimers, your customers have the right to know them, in regular print.

Ethic #4: Take a broad minded approach to your company business. If you use this ethical approach to your business strategies that are designed to grow your company, you are sure to experience more solid improvements on a regular basis. Also, you should view episodes of criticism as opportunities to grow.

Ethic #5: Maintain a level of confidentiality. One of the most important business ethics that you can have is to always provide confidentiality for both your employees and your clients. You should have policies on releasing financial and personal information about either of these groups. Your employees and your clients should be well informed of your policies regarding these disclosures.
