Today's Conservatives Are the Ones Who Are "Anti-American" - and like Bears!

Jeff Musall
If you listen to the likes of Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Sean Hannity, or any of the other very wealthy carnival barkers telling you about progressives, we seem a dim lot indeed.

They would have you believe progressives want to destroy America, to remake it into one sort of imagined hell or another. But when you think about it, what does it mean to be anti-American?

One might say to be against the interests of the majority of citizens, but that's not flashy enough for the cons. To them anti-American means anti-conservative and anti-nationalistic jingoism. Conservatives are quick to mouth when it comes to war, but need progressives to win and'/or end them, for the most part.

The American spirit used to be "can do" or to put it another way, "yes we can." Conservatives whine and only want to do the same things the same way, to the benefit of the corporations and not the people.

Energy? Cons say we can't switch to wind or solar, it's too hard, or too expensive, or there's just too much work involved. They would rather drill for more oil, dig for more coal, and fight against conservation.

We have the means now to build millions of electric cars and power them with wind and solar. What about long haul trucks, airplanes, and industrial applications of crude oil? Wouldn't it be smarter to save oil for uses we can't easily find alternatives for? Or should we just say screw it and use all we can as fast as we can, and let our kids deal with it?

Same with global warming, building infrastructure, reforming health care, or any idea that looks beyond the noses on conservative faces. Frankly, anything that requires thought and effort. Are you telling me we can't build windmills? Pretty easy blueprint, if you ask me. Sure, the transmission lines need updated, the locations need secured. But it's just not that hard! Cons are just not willing to try.

Yes, I said it - cons are lazy - of mind and spirit.

Whenever things have needed built or improved or innovated in has been progressive thought behind it. Sure, industrialists have grabbed ideas and locked them into their web of profit, but they don't do the innovation.

When politicians with R's by their names have made accomplishments, it's the progressive Republicans who do it. Like Eisenhower with the interstate freeway system.

Now how are conservatives like bears? What will a bear do if it comes upon a fruit tree? Destroy every part of it within reach, and try to knock the rest down. No concern about the future, the time is here and now and they want to eat. Bears (and most other animals, to be fair to bears) will consume everything they can. Nature keeps a cap on the numbers.

If a bear were progressive, they would nurture the fruit tree, take what they can, and remember where it is for next year. But of course, bears hibernate for the winter, we are forced to "bear" conservatives year around.

Progressives see a problem and look for a solution, conservatives see the very same problem and either throw up their hands in resignation - or more likely, try to obstruct what needs to be done.

Tea Party types these days like to try and claim the heritage of America's founders. Truth be told, they would have been the loyalists back then, happy in their little endeavors. Founding America was progressive!

Is it broad-brushing to say all conservatives aren't capable of actually doing anything constructive? Yes, of course there are going to be exceptions. Trouble is, they aren't the conservatives in charge of the movement or making the noise. They need to stand up to those who have so bastardized the American ideal.

Interesting, I have always felt you can't trust a politician.

Yes, exactly - that's it Tom, the secret is out - I must admit I do love the comments of the conservatives. Not only laughable, but often proving my points.

You want government to run every aspect of your life because you are not self sufficient or independent. You want to steal the profits of the hard workers and give them to the lazy libs. You love abortion and give no thought to killing those you don't want to support. Sorry, I don't want your communist government anywhere near my life.

Great analogy! And I agree with Michael, I've never understood why the average middle class American supports the Conservatives. They're the party of the rich, they are never going to help YOU, not unless you're making well over 1 million a year, yet these idiots still keep voting for them simply because they're anti-abortion and 'Christian' (they're about as 'Christian' as I am and I'm an atheist :)

Jeff,– You know nothing about Bears do you? A better Analogy – Bears are PROGRESSIVE … In every Nat’l park, you will see signs “Don’t Feed The Bears” Do you know why? Because the bears become DEPENDENT and AGGRESSSIVE –

    You're absolutely right.

Great article, but your comment about plastic grocery bags is even better. I cannot understand how working people continue to support the party of the rich, by the rich, for the parasitic rich to get richer and richer... and even to justify a connection with Christianity. Remember: it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven.

A good example of conservatives against conserving anything is plastic grocery bags. Really? Is it so hard to take a reusable bag? Is the plastic bag something so sacred, so deeply traditional that to get rid of it is somehow anti-American?
