Today's NFL

What's the Point?

Ryan Tackeberry
Vince Lombardi said all that needed to be said:

"Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing-the result." Results, however, are one thing that seem to be lacking as we warily watch the sunset on the 2009 season.

We've finished week 11 and two teams remain undefeated: The Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints, and one question remains firmly in the minds of most all fans of the NFL. Are these teams really that good or is the rest of the league really that bad? With 9 of 32 teams under four wins, unfortunately, it seems to be the latter. Even the "top" performers in the league are not performing at the top. Drew Brees, quarterback of the undefeated New Orleans Saints has put up decent percentages, however, he's still posted 9 interceptions and 13 sacks on the season. While Peyton Manning of the equally undefeated Indianapolis Colts boasts slightly better numbers, his "championship" team is not playing at all to its potential--to what we miss. An intangible not in any play book

Bad play and worse attitudes spread throughout the league like that trendy flu virus, the essential missing must-have in the "text generation's" NFL is: Passion. The ever-increasing regulations and league rule changes meant to "protect" the players, seem only to have weakened the game. Today's NFL is just a compendium of stifling rules. We talk about the good old days when all we want is the passion lacking in the present. We stand a sad, disgruntled lot. Sitting down to watch two teams attempt to remain undefeated and 30 others just try to stay afloat. Keep in mind this sad but salient observation:

Today's NFL just ain't what it used to be.
