Remember what civics class was like in high school? This is usually where future lawyers and politicians begin early yearnings. As we sit on the sidelines observing today's political environment, imagine its effect up students of civics in today's high schools and colleges. Where the reality of the economy and today's political issues, how do we explain to our children the ugliness and disrespect that is being displayed by both political parties.
One of the biggest issues among young students of civics today is the disrespect that is being shown to the leader of the free world. There are blatant acts of disrespect displayed by key players that will leave a lasting imprint on the students studying civics today. What we are experiencing is a perfect example of what we don't want our children to be as future politicians as leaders.
As parents and educators what can we do to teach our children about the political process and its effect upon every single citizen of the United States? A well informed civics student's is one that is on top of issues and is familiar with the side of both parties. Students of civics preparing to enter the political world should familiarize themselves with the key issues the nation faces. Ask your student what he or she proposes as a solution to the various important issues our country faces. Encourage your student of civics to visualize what the world would be like should their policies be applied to current issues.
Today's political environment is certain to have a lasting effect upon students of civics because of a couple of reasons. History was made with an African American being voted into the White House. Where this is memorable to all students of civics the unfortunate part is that there is still the same anguish and ugliness that came with racism centuries ago for individuals who cannot envision a Black man being the leader of the free world. Most of us in the world don't care if our president is black, white, Asian or Hispanic; we just want a fix to the massive problems our country faces. Today's officials on Capitol Hill for some reason have not jumped on the band wagon. Hopefully the upcoming generation of students of civics preparing for careers in politicians will get it right. For certain the current people on Capitol Hill are more concerned about who wins and taking their marbles home at the end of the day.
