Toddler Development: What to Expect At 16 Months

Now that your toddler is 16 months old, they have learned to enjoy you reading to them. They will show interest in reading by helping you turn the pages of the book. The more you read to your 16-month-old toddler the more they become interested in reading as they grow.

Have you noticed your 16-month-old's attachment to a blanket, a teddy bear or some other object? If so, this is normal. At 16 months old, a toddler starts to attach to certain objects. They may want to take a nap with a favorite blanket, or even a favorite stuffed animal. This is all part of security your child needs.

By 16 months, your toddler is a master at walking. Now is the time to add additional baby gates to keep your toddler safe. A toddler at 16 months is very inquisitive and begins to wander through your home he or she may get into trouble if they are not careful.

A parent may also start to notice a new milestone from their 16-month-old toddler. This new milestones will be one you will enjoy as a parent. It may also be when you want to videotape to show your toddler when they are older. Are you curious yet as to what this milestone is? This new milestone is singing and dancing. At 16 months old, a toddler will start to dance and sing along with different tunes. Watching your toddler sing and dance is fun.

Your toddler also may start to say 10 to 15 maybe even 20 words at a time. This is an even more exciting milestone for your 16-month-old toddler. You will find your toddler trying to say the words they hear you say. Try to get your toddler to save words like puppy, cat, bird, duck and any other simple words that sound easy enough for your 16-month-old toddler to remember.

Have you noticed your 16-month-old toddler trying to help you out when you clean house, let them do it. At 16 months old, a toddler wants to feel he is helping. Start to show them how to pick up their toys and place them in their toy box. If you have clothes lying on the floor get your toddler to help you pick them up and put them in the hamper. This will show your toddler you want their help.

Toddler Development: What They May Be Able To Do

At 16 months of age a toddler may also be able to do other things including prancing around like they own the house, taking off his shirt or even their diaper without your help, cry more often when you leave them with a babysitter which is called separation anxiety. This is normal for a 16-month-old toddler. Don't feel guilty about leaving your 16-month-old toddler. I guarantee that after about 5 minutes your toddler has stopped crying.

Also at 16 months old, a toddler will start to spit food out of his mouth that he does not want. This is normal they are discovering their own sense of taste. Don't try to force a child to eat something they do not want, this will only cause them to throw a tantrum.
