Toddlers Who Bite: How to Stop Them from This Bad Habit

Jasmine Starr

Habits are easily formed in toddlers and sometimes these habits can be formed without even being noticed. Noticing your child's bad habits is a good thing because this means you can still do something about it while it is not anchored too deep. Toddlers can have tons of habits and most of them can be very annoying such as pulling someones hair, sucking their thumb, and biting others. If your toddler has a habit of biting you or someone else in your family, this is definitely something that should be stopped and dealt with right away. For toddlers who bite, teaching them how to overcome this bad habit can be a real task but eventually, you will see satisfactory results.

In any relationship, communication is essential. The same principle applies to the relationship you have with your child regardless of their age. However, when talking with toddlers, you need to understand that you have to speak on their level of understanding and you have to shape your statements to get them to agree with you. Toddlers can be stubborn at times but with the right approach, they can be easy to persuade also. Talk with them about how biting is not good because it hurts other people. At the same time, help them understand that it doesn't reflect a good behavior that people should have. Use a gentle but firm tone with your toddler as well as a calm face so as not to scare him off or make them think it is in any way funny.

As with other bad habits he has, try to get your child to make believe with you and think of the bad habits as bad people that the two of you should work together to get rid of. This makes it seem fun for him because it sounds adventurous. Because of that, he will likely participate more without knowing that he is in fact attacking his own behaviors, although addressing only the bad ones.

You must be very patient when dealing with bad habits in toddlers. Toddlers are famous for their tantrums. Breaking a habit that they have somewhat grown accustomed to means stripping them off their favorite thing to do, their feeling of enjoyment. You will need lots of patience in order to impose what needs to be done to stop the biting habit. At the same time, you also need to be consistent so as not to confuse your child.
