"Together Again"-Barbie & Ken

Shirley Norling
To some, they may be just a couple of plastic dolls that a number of us have grown with, but on Valentines Day 2011, they are drawing national media attention. The Today Show made the official announcement that Barbie and Ken have reunited. Barbie, through a spokesman, reportedly said" she is in awe of the lengths Ken went through to possess his love for her" on their Valentine's reunion. "He knows how to sweep a doll off her feet", Barbie went on to say.

Ken left no stone unturned in his quest to get the bodacious blonde back. He went through a lot of extremes in hopes of getting Barbie back. He posted his love on billboards, including Times Square, since Jan. 24. "Barbie, I want you back, Barbie, you're the only doll for me, Barbie, we're made for each other, and Barbie, we may plastic, but our love is real(my favorite)", were some of the billboard postings. Now, I ask you, "who could possibly resist such romance" Barbie said Ken made her dreams come true and she is taking her main man back.

The plastic pair have a long history, logging in some 43 years as significant others, going through many looks, themes and hair colors. The two were introduced in 1961 and officially became boyfriend and girlfriend in 1962. In 2004 the couple split and Barbie took up with Blaine, an Australian surfer dude and Ken went bye-bye.

After Ken appeared on Toy Story 3 and was portrayed as the ultimate bachelor, interest sparked again about getting the two back together. The ultimate destiny for the 2 seemed to be being together.

Ken's ultimate bachelor status inspired a new online reality online show called-Genuine Ken: Search for the Great American Bachelor.

Ken took center stage for a very special exhibit at Christie's in New York during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. Six of the best menswear designers working together designed exclusive looks, inspired by Ken, which were then worked into vignettes among Christie's contemporary Art.

Ken got help from his parent company Mattel, who ran the campaign in New York City and Los Angelas to get his life-long love, Barbie, back in his life. I must say, this is some very smart marketing by Mattel to get the ball rolling to draw a new interest in Barbie and Ken again as they are about to turn 50. Not too many toys have survived a 50 year run.

Celebrations have already begun for Barbies 50th birthday, which is officially on Mar.9, according to msnbc.com. In honor of Barbie & Ken's reunited state, Mattel is issuing a bathing-suited Barbie & Ken, "She said Yes" set for a mere $5.00, as a nod to the original dolls from the'60's.

Now we all need to go to our attic's and dig out those history making, dust-covered Barbie & Ken dolls from days gone-bye and display them on the mantel again. Unfortunately, I don't have mine anymore.

My congratulations to the Today Show for running this story about such long-lasting love on Valentines Day, Feb.14, 2011.
