Tom Bass, African-American Horse Trainer

He was Always Horsing Around

Lee Hansen
Tom Bass was born 1859 in Columbia, Missouri to a slave woman at the Bass Plantation. After the Civil War he took a position of a stable boy.

In 1870 Tom moved to Mexico, Missouri. While there he had the opportunity to work and groom many horses as a trainer. He had an uncanny ability to work with some of the most difficult horses. By the 1890's he was considered to be one of the best horse trainers in the world.

Kansas City is where he relocated after leaving Mexico. While there he got a stable and began training horses. His reputation spread rapidly and many horse owners sought his help. He was selected to be a member of the Board of Advisors for the Kansas City Fire Department. They were trying to find ways to raise money. Tom Bass suggested that they sponsor a horse show. So in 1892 with a big tent set up, they hosted this special event. It was the precursor to the modern day American Royal.

For fifty years he trained horses to bow, curtsy, dance, prance and many more tricks. He was always a crowd pleaser. While he knew of his skills in this field he remained humble. A special bit that is still in use today was invented by him. He refused to patent this invention.

He performed before Presidents Coolidge, Cleveland, McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Taft.

Some of his accomplishments include winning two World's Fair champion events. When he participated in horse show competitions he always won some kind of award. In his career he earned more than 2,000 blue ribbons. Many of these awards are on display at the American Saddlebred Horse Museum in Mexico, Missouri.

Although born of a slave woman he found freedom and joy in horses. It was his passion and his life's call. And to this day he remains a legend.

He passed away in 1934.

Lee, I am reading a good book, Beautiful Jim Key, who was a very smart and talented horse, and also tells of his owner/trainer's journey Dr. William Key. You might enjoy it.
