While the internet can be a wealth of information, it can also be a breeding ground for falsities and rumors. Once posted, they spread and get picked up by every little website and blog out there. If you don't believe the number of rumors circulating in cyberspace, just visit the Snopes website. Here you can find all the rumors, urban legends and email hoaxes.
Our obsession with movie stars and public figures and our need to know the latest news sometimes leads us to accept every larger than life claim we see about them. When Princess Diana died, every news venue around the world was saturated with news of her death and speculations on what happened, who was responsible and showcasing her life and works.
Which leads to my next point, if Tom Cruise were really dead, you would see it announced on reputable news sources. It would be all over television and being reported on by mainstream media, not just gracing the pages of obscure internet sites.
Tom Cruise may be the latest subject or victim of a celebrity death hoax, but he seems to be in good company. Just this year we have seen internet death hoaxes about Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Taylor Lautner from Twilight, Johnny Depp, and Bill Cosby. While these are the latest hoaxes to circulate, they are by no means anything new. Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra were also rumored dead following the death of Franklin Roosevelt in 1945.
One of the most famous hoaxes regarding the death of a celebrity was the "Paul is dead" rumor. That purported that Paul McCartney of Beatles fame had died. Obviously he was alive and well then and still is today as he recently announced his plans to have a concert at the White House and perform for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
I recommend the next time you read something devastating on the internet regarding a public figure, you go to a reputable news source and find out the real facts. The average Joe's website won't generally get the jump on a major news story over all other established media sources. If you are reading about a celebrity death via email instead of seeing it on the evening news, it is probably just a rumor.

Post a CommentI dunno. Isn't it pretty easy to stop those rumors dead in theior tracks?
What will Tom Cruise do next for attention! He actually is DEAD! TOM CRUISE died a long time ago (after the filming of 4th of July). Though he continues surfacing in various films, his zombie-like non-acting abilities and totally dead-pan personality certainly attests to the fact that TOM CRUISE DIED A LONG TIME AGO! SO DID PAUL McCARTNEY, for that matter! Too bad their old worn-out ghosts keep haunting us!..........not a fan!
"While the internet can be a wealth of information, it can also be a breeding ground for falsities and rumors." I'm not sure what you mean by this. I believe EVERYTHING I read on the Internet.
Elvis told me to.
