Tom Cruise Mentally Ill?

WENN is reporting that Dr. Drew Pinsky is questioning the actor's mental health in a recent interview with Playboy Magazine. Pinsky apparently feels that Cruise's involvement with Scientology is a "function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect." It is reported that Cruise's attorney Bert Fields has shot back at the doctor, calling him "grotesquely unprofessional," comparing him to a Nazi propaganda chief by the name of Joseph Goebbels.

It remains to be seen whether or not this was a wise decision as Cruise's mental health has been the subject of debate for some time now. One of the first incidents that caused a great many raised eyebrows was his couch-jumping antics on Oprah. This episode sparked an internet viral video comparing Tom Cruise to the emperor on Star Wars, with him sending electric shocks at Oprah, a comparison to the climatic series ending in which the emperor attacked Luke Skywalker.

After this, Cruise's support of the controversial Scientology religion (not actually even recognized as a legitimate religion in some areas, but rather a business) raised even more questions as to the state of his mental health, as Scientology has been the subject of much investigation with allegations of illegal practices and possible connections to murder.

Cruise then came out against anti-depressants and slammed Brooke Shields, on television, for her promotion of them after her dealings with post-partum depression. However, he later took her flowers and apologized for his statements that had medical professionals seeing red.

This is what has led many to proclaim that Cruise is quite fine. He is known by those close to him to be a dedicated and upstanding citizen. While his behavior has often crossed into strange territory, he has never gotten involved in much of the illegal and hedonistic celebrity antics that clutter entertainment news. It remains to be seen how this TV doctor's assessment will affect Cruise's public perception, and whether or not legal action will follow.
