His first huge blockbuster in 1986, Topgun seen him playing an arrogant fighter pilot called 'Maverick'. In this film Tom tries to be the best fighter pilot he can be and in the process he falls in love with one of his instructors. The film won a catalogue of awards including People's Choice Award and Best Soundtrack, with the theme song being 'Take my Breath Away' by Berlin. The biggest award of all was probably the £350 million made by the film.
Next on my list comes Rain Man, which hit the screens in 1988. Here Cruise plays a car dealer who finds out his father has passed away and left his £3 million estate to Cruise's unbeknown brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman plays an autistic character, who is excellent at recalling numbers and has a tendency to repeat phrases such as'11 o'clock lights out'. The film earned £172 million and won 4 academy awards such as Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman.
In 1990 Cruise takes to the screen with future wife Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder. Here he played a racing car driver who got his big break on the circuit after the main driver fell ill. Cruise finds love with Kidman who plays a brain surgeon. This film earned much less revenue, £60 million, compared with other Cruise films and received mixed reviews.
1992 seen Cruise pairing up with Kidman again in the Irish based film, Far and Away, which made £138 million. Here again Cruise and Kidman fall in love, despite Cruise's early attempts to kill her father, his landlord, who tried to evict him from his property.
In 1996 Tom Cruise plays a sport agent called Jerry Maguire in a comedy of the same name. The film is based on Cruise trying to make one of his sports stars the best he can be. He stars alongside Renee Zellweger, who he also falls in love with. The film is mostly remembered for his quotes such as 'Show me the money' and 'You had me at hello'. Despite its popularity the film only made £50 million.
The three Mission Impossible movies earned massive amounts of revenue. Mission Impossible 1 released in 1996 made over $450 million, the sequel released in 2000 made $540 million, and finally Mission Impossible 3 released in 2006 made just under $400 million.
Tom Cruise's life has been a success on and off the screen and things just seem to be getting better and better for him, wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri.

Post a CommentCruise almost played my ancestor in Cold Mountain but turned it down.
Risky Business and Cocktail are two of my favorites of Cruise. Eyes Wide Shut was a little on the creepy side but still better than Days of Thunder :)
He deserves a long service award
