Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's: An American Legend Rocks America's Game

Marissa Mason
I have to be honest - I wasn't going to watch any of the Superbowl, not even for the commercials! When I saw the commercial for Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's halftime show I was intrigued but anxious. Would they live up to their reputation as one of America's greatest rock n roll bands?

Fortunately, yes. Tom Petty rocked without pretension and with energy, dignity, and soul. Half-time shows have sorely lacked the last two qualities in recent years. First of all, the stage was significantly less "produced" than in recent years. A few classy touches were all that was needed. The guys stuck to the classics too, which was disappointing since their last album, The Last DJ, was highly acclaimed.

The first song played, "American Girl", was a fitting beginning and was performed earnestly. The soulfulness of "Free Falling" was palpable as well, and the guys let loose and had fun when it came to "Running Down a Dream". I consider myself only a casual fan, but my throat caught from the first notes of "American Girl". "Running Down a Dream" brought back the same feeling of possibilty as it did the first time I heard it.

The Heartbreakers' lead guitarist, Mike Campbell, showed off and played to the audience. When Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who is probably a more notable guitarist, played you would have thought he didn't even see the people cheering. The Rolling Stones' show is the best recent performance with which to compare tonight's half-time show. Everything about Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers halftime show proves the more laid back American rockers are a better live band than their English counterparts.

I'm glad the Super Bowl producers recognized Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as an act that still resonates with people. I'm even happier that I was able to catch it live. If you missed it a version will hopefully show up soon on Tom Petty's YouTube channel, and is worth the 12 minutes. Or better yet, check out the band's site and consider giving their lasted music a try.

While they aren't my preferred music choice, I do feel like they did an excellent job. :-)

The Halftime show was excellent - I LOVE Tom Petty! I just wish it had been longer, but the game was awesome, too. :-)
