Tommy Hilfiger: New York Fashion Week Review

Originally from Elmira, New York, Tommy Hilfiger has become a household name in the world of fashion and has been regarded as an all-American designer since appearing on the fashion scene in 1984. He is best known for his preppy sportswear, and his designs are now sold exclusively in Macy's stores and in boutiques bearing his name. His celebrity clients include Prince Charles, Leonardo Di Caprio, Snoop Dogg, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez. In addition to his women's and men's wear collections, Mr. Hilfiger also is known for his lines of eyewear, fragrances, home décor, handbags, jeans, lingerie, shoes, sneakers, underwear, and children's wear.

On September 17, 2009, Tommy Hilfiger presented his Spring 2010 collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. That line will be reviewed in this article.

Style Themes

As is characteristic of Mr. Hilfiger, the sporty, nautical, and preppy looks reigned supreme. Two-piece suits matched with a white shirt and a traditional tie or bowtie as well as sports jackets paired with khaki pants, white pants, or even shorts could be seen throughout the runway show. Long, flowing jackets, light colored V-neck sweaters, lightweight blazers and trench coats, baggy, loose-fitting pants, and shorts were present. All of the combinations of clothes were tastefully matched and accented with shoes that added to the effect.

Strapless mini dresses, tank dresses, and maxi dresses were all represented in the show. A few of the dresses had a side split up to the knee on one side while one dress had a dramatic off-the-shoulder look. A one-piece, navy and white vertically-striped swimsuit made an appearance.

Colors

A variety of hues were present in the Hilfiger runway show: light pink, white, tan, navy, black, gray, bright sapphire blue, red, khaki, buckskin brown, nude, mint green, light blue, and yellow. Several of the designs placed black and white as well as navy and white together. The lighter colors also seemed to be more dominant than the darker tints as tends to be characteristic with most spring collections.

Prints

Various prints with navy and white together were featured in the runway show: white and navy vertical stripes, horizontal stripes, and triangles. Lightweight sweaters with trim around the neckline were also present.

Accessories Used

Sunglasses, belts with silver accents, ties, bowties, white pocket handkerchiefs, and even a fluorescent green watch were used to accent the designs. The shoes included peep toe high-heeled ankle booties, oxford style shoes, strappy sandals, gladiator sandals, deck shoes, and sporty tennis shoes. The predominant style of handbag featured was a quilted clutch with a gold or silver chain handle and a decorative tassel.
