During his career Tony Curtis managed to catapult himself from 1950s heart throb to a well respected actor.

The Oscar nominated actor died at age 85 Wednesday evening of a cardiac arrest at his home in Las Vegas home, said Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy.

Curtis began his acting career in frivolous movies that exploited his good looks and charm but then began moving on to more serious roles in 1957 with "Sweet Smell of Success."

In 1958 "The Defiant Ones" warranted him an Academy Award nomination for best actor for his portrayal of a white racist who escapes from jail handcuffed to a black man played by Sydney Poitier. The following year he sported womens clothing alongside Marilyn Monroe in "Some Like it Hot."

His first wife was actress Janet Leigh witch whom he had a daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Like many in the Hollywood scene, Curtis struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. However, he managed to bounce back in film and television as a character actor. When opportunities began to dwindle he came back once again and reinvented himself as a painter

Curtis also performed in other prestigious films such as "Sparticus", "The Vikings", "Captain Newman, M.D.", "Kings Go Forth", and "Operation Petticoat."
