Too Much Too Little

A Father's Song

Rick Amandan

I kiss my daughter lightly,
Her sweet head against my chest,
And tuck her in with Frances,
Put that bear against her breast.
For a moment in the darkness
She's there for me to hold,
And I pray her light still shimmers
In the days when I've grown old.

But if I love too much too little;
If I hesitate or wait.
All our time will pass too quickly
Until I walk through this life's gate.
If I never see another sunset,
If I never hear another song,
I won't love too much too little.
I won't wait until she's gone.

I pat my young man's shoulder,
Then I ruffle up his hair.
Unspoken words between us
Let him know how much I care.
And as he's heading out the doorway
With guitar case in his hand,
I wish I could go with him.
He's the best friend that I have.

But if I love too much too little;
If I hesitate or wait.
All our time will pass too quickly
Until I walk through this life's gate.
If I never see another sunset,
If I never hear another song,
I won't love too much too little.
I won't wait until he's gone.

Some nights when all is quiet,
With the kids and wife asleep.
I turn off all the lights left on
While they were falling deep.
And I smile about the laughter,
All the love and pain we share,
And I hope that they will always know
How very much I care.

But if I love too much too little;
If I hesitate or wait.
All our time will pass too quickly
Until I walk through this life's gate.
If I never see another sunset,
If I never hear another song,
I won't love too much too little.
I won't wait until they're gone.

    Beautiful-it reminds me of a poem I wrote my dad a long time ago-I will have to find it and add it to my poetry listing. Lucky kids....
