Somewhere a mouse is skritching,
chewing something left behind.
Above my head a cat jumps.
A book falls.
Television jabbers.
Phone rings to dead air.
My ears strain for sounds
I know won't come.
The closing door,
the rising steps,
hum of voices,
trickle of laughter,
objects dropped for later.
Now,
a misplaced thump,
a foolish leap of heart,
beyond the clutch
of reason.
It is too quiet here.
Amongst the clatter
and the noise,
I cannot hear
at all.

Post a Commentgreat job! Hugz CJ
Thank you all. It is a hard adjustment.
Yeah. We sent our oldest off to college and I surely do miss her. Of course the other kids keep me busy but that one empty chair at the dinner table just gets to me.
Great! You are person of talent!
Oh, this is great! Isn't it odd how silence can be deafing?
Ooh, great!
So vivid and evocative of your surroundings, and with a strong emotional subtext as well.
Great poem!
Very vivid. I've favorited you, as we seem to have a lot of the same interests.
I love that ending!!!!!!
