Too Quiet Here (A Poem)

Tina Twito
It is too quiet here.

Somewhere a mouse is skritching,
chewing something left behind.

Above my head a cat jumps.
A book falls.
Television jabbers.
Phone rings to dead air.

My ears strain for sounds
I know won't come.

The closing door,
the rising steps,
hum of voices,
trickle of laughter,
objects dropped for later.

Now,
a misplaced thump,
a foolish leap of heart,
beyond the clutch
of reason.

It is too quiet here.

Amongst the clatter
and the noise,
I cannot hear
at all.

So vivid and evocative of your surroundings, and with a strong emotional subtext as well.
