Tools to Pick Keyword Terms in Writing for the Web

Keywords Important to Writing for the Web

Barbara
Making money on the internet calls for writing with keyword density and creating web sites that appeal to advertisers based on readers clicking on the ads. For anyone who writes for the web, you should add these terms to your toolbox.

Just as keyword density says, writing text that is sprinkled with a high concentration of keywords. Keywords are terms that people plug into search engines, such as writing for the web, mortgage interest rates or Paris Hilton.

The web site www.onestat.com conducted research that showed almost 30 percent of internet users search using two-word phrases. When determining your keyword phase while writing for the web, think of terms that you use when searching the internet or how you would phrase a search.

A great tool in selecting and generating ideas for what would work as a keyword term is a tool offered by Keyword Discovery, http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html. The tool is a keyword search that is indispensable in writing for the web. Keyword Discovery even offers a free trial.

Another good place to go when settling on keywords to use in your writing for the web is a report linked on http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/keywords/. For example on June 14, a search for the top searched terms in the previous 48 hours were, in descending order, Paris Hilton, myspace, game cheats for ps2, google and ebay. None of these would be a surprise, but it's confirmation to see it in writing. The actual search is conducted by WordTracker and pulled from a database based on 320 million searches.

Google also offers a helpful tool, https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. With the use of these keyword tools, you can type in a basic phrase, for example "decorate baby room." The keyword tool will offer other search terms that go along with your phrase, for example "baby nursery decorating ideas," "decorating the baby nursery," or "baby room décor."

Finally, the search that I find to be the most helpful is at WordTracker, freekeywords.wordtracker.com. Checking in with the Paris Hilton searches, you see that not only is her name regularly sought, but the phrases listed in descending order are Paris Hilton, Paris Hilton video, Paris Hilton tape, one night in Paris Hilton and even specifics such as Paris Hilton getting out of a car.

Keyword density is the name of the game when writing for the web. But, to make your keywords really count you should also select keywords that are highly searched. This should be the foundation of your writing provided your intention is page views. Granted, keyword density does not always lend itself to great writing. But, with practice, great writing and keyword density can dovetail nicely.
