Chris Shaw won the largest Powerball Jackpot in Missouri history. According to NBC Action news, "It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy", stated by his co-workers. He was a truck driver before he decided to work closer to his family in Marshall Mo. He got a job at the Break Time convenience store only a month ago, making just $7.25 an hour, working as a clerk.
While reading this story, I wondered what it would be like to win a $258 million dollar jackpot. The thought that all your financial worries would be over, and the stress over finances and bills would be gone that very moment. However, the winning of a lottery could be a double edged sword, and has been known to to destroy many individuals and families.
Having lot's of money comes with lot's of responsibilities, and that equals to lot's of stress. Someone who lives pay check to pay check, and not accustomed to managing their money, will likely loose their fortune within a short time.
Most people think, by having that much money you would be stress free. That may be true for a short time, but chances are you will have to change the way you do almost everything.
Many lives have been changed for the worse, after winning the lottery. According to MSN, having piles of money can compound your problems! Read about these 8 lottery winners who lives are now ruined.
My short term advise to anyone faced with overnight millionaire syndrome is, change your phone number and move as soon as possible. Don't tell anyone where you are for a while, get a good lawyer, and learn to say the word No!
There will be people coming out of the woodwork, trying to separate you from your money. You will need to get a backbone. Be prepared to hear every sob story in the book, from your friends, your family and people you don't even know. There's nothing wrong with helping your friends or family out, that's for sure, but there's no rush either! Ask yourself, what would they do if you didn't win?
$258M is by no means, chump change, so its safe to say Mr. Shaw can afford to make a few mistakes, and help a few people, along the way. I don't think "easy come easy go" will apply in this particular case, but after reading His story, it will be interesting to see where he ends up a year from now.
His immediate plans are simple. He plans to pay off the used truck he bought for a $1000.00, he previously agreed to pay in $100.00 monthly payments. He is missing two front teeth caused from lack of care and no money. He plans to have them replaced right away. When he was asked if he would quit his minimum wage job, he said he still did not know yet.
Many people are asking, if he even knows just how rich he really is. In my opinion, probably not! One thing is for sure, he will need financial counseling to handle that much money.
Shaw said he was notified by a friend who sent him a text on that morning, stating that the winning ticket was bought at the Break Time, where he bought his ticket, and he also worked. He went over to Break Time to confirm the winning numbers. He was in shock when he confirmed it was the winning ticket.
His plans are to pay his utility bills, and pay off the used truck he bought from his friend. He also has other plans to buy a new truck, a hot rod, and a new boat. Some of the things he's always wanted. ( Source: msnbc news).
I'm happy to see it went to someone who really really needs it!
I would say "good luck", but luck is not an issue for him anymore.

Post a CommentI agree!!
I'm pretty sure the jail/meth story is just a rumor going around. I'm from Marshall and there's been nothing in the paper here about it. Plus my son is friends with one of his kids (girlfriend's son) and he talks to him on Facebook a lot and he's said nothing about it. So I don't think it's true.
Ok, I can't find any information on him being arrested. Where is the link to that story?
yeah...so i heard this guy is in jail now for meth. what a waste. this guy didn't need this money...he's just gonna BLOW it all in a couple of years and be broke once again. He'll have all the money he needs for all the meth he wants. Sure...get your teeth fixed, then do more meth and lose the fixed teeth or more for that matter. Funny how people are seeing him as a "nice guy" and "deserving" of the money when in fact that's the WORST person to win all that money! I hope he does the right thing..and learns his lesson from being in jail.
Personally, I think the media did a number on him. They came just short of giving out his phone number. They preyed on an ignorant person who was obviously not wise enough to keep his plans quiet.
I agree, this guy made a HUGE mistake going public about this. Bad enough he has an ex-wife and a girl friend to satisfy and a total of 4 kids between the two women on top of that, and "Oh yeah I'm going to Disneyworld" No no no!!! You keep a definate low profile, have fun but discreetly and anonymously donate to worthwhile causes. Least that's what I'd do.
