Top 10 2011 Golden Globe Moments: Ricky Gervais Steals the Show

Aida Ekberg
Here's a look at the top ten moments at the 2011 Golden Globes. Since the winners weren't all that surprising, it was up to host Ricky Gervais to steal the show, and boy did he ever. But there were a few Ricky Gervais-free moments that were rather enjoyable, too. Here's a look at some of the best with and without the shocking star:

January Jones finally one-ups Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks was obviously tired of everyone talking about the massive amount of cleavage she shows off at most red carpet events, because she covered every bit of it for the 2011 Golden Globes, even going so far as to pin one of those hideous globs of fabric actresses so often fall in love with on one shoulder. And so this was January Jones' chance to be the most talked-about "Mad Men" star on the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet; sure her red dress was the same color as that of Christina Hendricks, but with her bandage top, she made sure that she was the one with all the cleavage this year. However, Sofia Vergara out-bombshelled both of them with her also-red dress, and though she didn't win, she tweeted, "I don't care!!! I already have my Golden Globes!!!!!!!!hahhahha". Beat that, Jane Lynch.

Ricky Gervais targets "The Tourist"

Ricky Gervais really laid it into "The Tourist" at the 2011 Golden Globes, saying that everything was in 3D this year...except the characters in "The Tourist" (it was a joke that Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp got nominated in the comedy categories to begin with, or, as Ricky Gervais put it, a way to get them to show their famous faces at the awards ceremony).

Ricky Gervais targets Scientology

Well, actually Ricky Gervais' scientology joke was aimed directly at Tom Cruise, without him ever having to mention the actor's name. He was talking about some actors that got snubbed for playing gay characters this year, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, applauding the guys for doing such a great job for being straight and playing gay men in "I Love You Phillip Morris". And then he pointed out that some scientologists do the exact opposite in real life. Later on in the show, Ricky Gervais disappeared for about an hour, prompting many tweets wondering if he had gotten fired for this particular joke. But, luckily, he returned to deliver some more zingers.

Ricky Gervais targets Hugh Hefner

Ricky Gervais first compared Hugh Hefner to one of the zombies on "The Walking Dead" before joking that his 24-year-old fiancé was marrying him because she thought he was 94, not 84 (ouch!). And then he reenacted a night in Hugh Hefner's infamous bed, complete with lots of gagging.

Ricky Gervais points out Scarlett Johansson is Jewish

Who knew Scarlett Johansson is Jewish? Apparently Mel Gibson did; Ricky Gervais stated that before the 2011 Golden Globes, Mel Gibson pointed this fun fact out to him, stating that "the man is obsessed."

Ricky Gervais targets Bruce Willis

One of the briefest but funniest moments of the 2011 Golden Globes has to be Ricky Gervais introducing Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher's dad.

Helena Bonham Carter wears two different colored shoes! OMG!

Sorry, one of the most ridiculous 2011 Golden Globe moments actually came before the show when the talking heads at E! were making such a big deal out of Helena Bonham Carter wearing two different colored shoes (is it really that surprising that she wore something kooky?). I actually appreciate her wackiness and wish more actresses would take a page from her; it would make these predictable, let's-pat-ourselves-on-the-back ceremonies just a tad more entertaining.

Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sex Joke

Ricky Gervais pointed out that all of Robert Downey Jr.'s movie titles sound like they could be pornos, so Robert Downey, Jr. took the sex joke even further, telling all the actresses in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category that he doesn't think an actress can do her best work until she's slept with him. He went on to announce the nominees, joking afterward that if he could, he would give it to all five of them, at once, in front of his wife, the camera, and millions of viewers. So was he talking about the award, or something else?

Steve Carell/Ricky Gervais Banter

Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais gave us the last bit of "The Office" jabs that we'll likely ever see the two do together. Ricky Gervais called Steve Carell "ungrateful" and called him out for "killing a cash cow for the both of us". Steve Carell also made a great crack about how would have given his right arm to be the one that wrote the "127 Hours" screenplay. It's such a shame these two aren't hosting the Oscars (and I doubt either will be asked to host anything again; Steve Carell might vanish into obscurity after leaving his most beloved character behind, and I'm betting Ricky Gervais would have been fired in the middle of the 2011 Golden Globes if it was possible).

Ricky Gervais' Last Line

To ensure that he never gets called to the Golden Globes again, Ricky Gervais closed by taking a jab at one of the most oft-thanked beings in awards show speeches. After reading off a long list of everyone that has to be thanked at the end of an awards show, he closed with "and thank you, God, for making me an atheist".

So thank you, Ricky Gervais for making the 2011 Golden Globes more bearable to watch. I know I've left off some good jabs, like those at Sylvester Stallone and Tim Allen; Natalie Portman calling Mila Kunis "Sweet Lips"; and other great fashion moments (what was up with Sandra Bullock's bangs?), so feel free to share more of your favorite moments in the comments.
