Top 10 Action Movies of 2011: The Best Action Packed Movies Coming to the Theaters This Year

Ten Action Movies to Watch This Year

Bryan Mckinley
The movie theaters will be loaded with great action and adventure movies in 2011. Ryan Reynolds as a superhero, the return of Jack Sparrow and Dewayne Johnson joining the Fast and Furious franchise are some of the highlights in the 2011 best movies for action junkies. And those are just a few of the things that make this year's crop of action movies look even better than the best thrillers of 2010. Here are the top 10 action movies that movie-goers can't wait to see. Which of these highly anticipated films are you most excited to see?

10. Contagion - What would the most anticipated movies of 2011 be if there wasn't a Matt Damon sighting somewhere at the theaters? Damon teams up with an amazing cast that consists of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and Kate Winslet. This sci-fi thriller reminds me of "Outbreak," as the plot for both involve a team of doctors versus a world threatening deadly disease. The Steven Soderbergh directed movie will come to theaters on October 21st, 2011.

9. Thor - Let the superhero movies of 2011 begin. Chris Hemsworth brings the legend of the arrogant warrior god to life on May 20th with hammer and all. Will Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins be able to help this film out enough for it to profit on its' enormous $150 million budget?

8. The Three Musketeers - Hollywood can never let go of classics, and "The Three Musketeers" is as classic as it gets when it comes to action adventure movies. The newest flick of the adventurers comes to the theaters on October 14th 2011. Let's all hope that Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and crew isn't this years Robin Hood.

7. Cowboys & Aliens - Why play Cowboys and Indians when you can have aliens mixed in with your cowboys? This much awaited sci-fi, western thriller is slated for July 29th, 2011. How can you not be interested in the wild, wild west versus space aliens duel? Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Daniel Craig lead the way in this film that is centered in the year 1873.

6. Green Lantern - I loved Ryan Reynolds in Van Wilder and in The Propsal. I must be honest; I haven't seen any action movies he has played in so far. However, this June 17th release has got me interested. It's time I see how good of an actor Reynolds really is. I just really wish Tim Robbins would have had a bigger role. Now that would've helped hook me for sure.

5. Pirates of the Carribean 4 - At this point, if there was a Pirates of the Caribbean 10, I would probably still want to go see it. I know the second one was a bit disappointing. Although the third one was an improvement, it still couldn't even come close to the magic of the first film in the Disney series. The thing is I just love Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow that much. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are out. On May 20th, we welcome Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane to Jack Sparrow's world.

4. Fast Five - The Fast and the Furious 5 still stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, but there is a new man in town. If I was to name one guy I would have liked to see join the Fast and Furious franchise, it would've been Dewayne Johnson. Well, it looks like I wasn't the only one thinking that as The Rock plays federal agent Luke Hobbs in one of the most anticipated action movies of 2011. Why can't April 29th be earlier in the year?

3. Captain America: The First Avenger - I have a slight problem with Chris Evans being the choice to play Captain America. It's not a knock on his acting skills in any way, but I just don't like a guy playing two different super heroes. I know Captain America is much bigger than the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, but I really would have preferred Captain America be a new player to the hero role. Even with this slight problem I have with the super hero flick, I can't wait for this movie to come to theaters. I'm planning on being one of the many people catching Evans and Samuel L. Jackson on the big screen July 22nd.

2. X-Men: First Class - Ever since the first X-men movie hit the big screen in 2000, movie-goers have fallen in love with the heroes. On June 3rd, 2011, X-Men First Class plans on continuing that trend. In the new addition to the movie franchise, Professor X and Magneto are shown before they became their present day selves. Adding a little extra to the action adventure movie is Kevin Bacon's appearance. Now it will be that much easier to play the game six degrees of Kevin Bacon.

1. Transformers 3 - Sorry guys. No more Megan Fox. Before you go getting all teary-eyed on me look up the name Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. I think the new leading lady of the Transformers franchise will help you recover. Michael Bay has stated that Transformers: Dark of the Moon will follow more in the footsteps of the first film than the second one. Instead of just action, action, action; the third installment to the series will also have a very strong storyline like Transformers I did. Either way, pencil me in for the July 1st, 2011, theatrical debut.
