Top 10 Add-Ins for Macaroni and Cheese

Lee
After surveying a group of moms, many whom make macaroni and cheese more than they would like to admit, I came up with the ten most popular add-in items for macaroni and cheese. It would be no surprise that first on the list is a child's favorite meat!

1. Yes that would be correct, hot dogs. Cut into bite-size pieces, kids love this combination.

Next on the list is a great idea for those of you that crave something Mexican.

2. Hamburger and taco seasoning. It might sound a little crazy but this is like a cheesy, meaty, taco without the shell goodness!

You might not like the sound of this next item, but it is crazy good!

3. Ranch and garlic salt. I have tried all of these recipes and this was one of my favorites!

A fourth pick for the list was a little hard to determine. The votes were pretty close between the fourth and fifth items.

4. Without any further ado, number four goes to bologna! Almost like a hot dog but cold, this is a great way for children to get a variety of tastes!

5. Coming in very close to number four is tomato sauce, hamburger and chili powder. This is a mini casserole that can be made with a box of macaroni and cheese!

6. Not far behind the rest of the pack is number six. This item is a little out of the ordinary for macaroni and cheese, but kids love it! Crushed ranch Doritos. I am not sure why this is so popular with the kids, but it isn't too bad for the adults either!

7. This next item is more of a southern specialty. Barbecue sauce and little wieners. Adding these into macaroni and cheese gives the food a western flavor with all of the meat and mess in one bowl.

8. We can call this one crazy eight! Coming in at number eight is salsa and sour cream. This can also be used as a great dip for tortilla chips.

9. Don't be afraid of number nine; it won't be as gassy as you would think! Add some baked beans and the kids will be licking their fingers off!

And last but not least, number ten. This was a harder choice than you would think!

10. The voters decided that number ten would go to, drum roll please! Chicken nuggets! It may sound like an easy choice, but with some ketchup and chicken nuggets added to macaroni and cheese your children will eat their entire plate!

I cooked up all of these recipes for my two boys and they love the variations that I can give them. They still love regular macaroni and cheese but will ask for a special dish when they don't want just plain old macaroni and cheese!

I love tuna casserole-just make the mac & cheese, add peas (or peas and carrots), and mushroom soup. Soooo good.

Too many exclamation points. Consider revising.

I grew up with either tuna or even better kippered herring added. add some peas too and its great, surimi fake-crab meat is good also

    I have three favorites:

    1. Tuna: Great if you're hungry as it REALLY boosts the fillingness of the mac and cheese. (One can per box. ;)

    2. Pepperoni: I do this if I just want an excuse to just eat pepperoni but would feel too guilty eating it straight up. Tastes good with the cheese sauce, actually. (It's a bit much, but I frequently dump the whole package in there, though maybe a quarter of a pack would be more ideal. I'm gluttonous about pepperoni.)

    3. Chili: VERY good way to serve up a good 2-4 person meal. Tastes absolutely wonderful. (1 can per box. It really works VERY well.)

I haven't experimented with much else.

A favorite of my kiddos is to mix in chopped broccoli, too! Their favorite, though is hotdogs & peas mixed in.

Brings back memories: mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs was a weekly fancy dinner of my childhood!

Interesting article. I haven't gotten much into pasta yet, maybe I'll try my hand at it.

Some great variations here. I've tried hot dogs and the little wieners with BBQ sauce but none of the others. I'll have to give these a go!
