Top 10 Anti Valentines Day Songs

Kathleen Lynn
When trying to decide what songs should make the top ten list for being Anti Valentine's Day, I decided to purse songs that are negative about romance or love. Ones that emphasize the emotions associated with a failed relationship and are least likely to get you in the mood for love. Perhaps, in some cases they are even angry rather than happy, feel good ones.

1. You Ought a Know by Alanis Morisette - This is an angry, emotional song to an ex. She is inquiring as to how his life has evolved since he left her and throwing the promises he had made her back in his face. This is a great song if you're going through a horrible divorce but a terrible choice for your candlelit evening with your partner. I personally, love to crank this tune in the car on a bad day and just scream along for a nice stress relief. Though, I don't recommend this therapy if you have anything else that is alive in the car with you!

2. Song for the Dumped by Ben Folds - Doesn't the title say it all? I suppose this would be okay if you're looking for a Valentine's Day with the same gender complaining about the opposite sex. But for romance this is not a good choice. It might also work if you plan to dump your partner during the candlelit dinner, and remind them of everything you want back. Like your money, black t-shirt, etc.

3. Leaving by Jesse McCartney - Another song that probably will not put you in the romance mood unless you plan to spend Valentine's Day with a tryst. It is all about telling your partner good bye, your moving on, and oh yes, wait, I found someone who loves me better.

4. FURB by Frankie and Eamon - This is actually two separate songs but there is also one compiled song of both the artists. It is all about a couple that has split up and are very angry with each other. This is not ideal for dancing under the stars, too. It is much more appropriate when the break up is still fresh in your mind and all you feel is anger.

5. 70x's7 by Brand New - Not only does this scream of all the anguish of a broken heart it takes things right into a whole 'nother psychotic level. With lyrics such as: I want to kill you like only a best friend could. I hope you choke and die. Have another drink and drive yourself home. I hope there's ice all over the roads. Think of me when you forget your seatbelt and again when your head goes through the windshield." Not a normal Valentine's Day song!

6. Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar - This should probably not come up between the appetizer and main course on Valentine's Day. Unless you both have a wicked sense of humor.

7. You've Lost That Loving Feeling by Righteous Brothers - Imagine the meal settling in your belly as you relax in front of a cozy fire and turn on the radio to hear this coming out. Nothing to break that snuggly, loving mood like hearing you have lost that spark. Probably not a good Valentine's song.

8. I Hate Everything About You by Three Grace - This is the perfect conversation song, I can't understand why this is on an Anti- Valentine's Day list. (All sarcasm intended) But seriously, guys your girl will not find this as funny as you're thinking they will when you add it to the playlist.

9. You and Your Hand by Pink - I would suppose if you are really feeling angry with your partner, this would make some sense. Or if you just want to let them know before the wine where the evening is heading, by all means, play this one. It will make your intentions or lack of them perfectly clear early on.

10. Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood - While this might be a good remainder that he is involved with a woman with some major anger issues, it's probably not going to inspire flowers or chocolate. In fact he might be too afraid to even come near you again for a long, long time if you let him know this song is all about you and your last boyfriend.

While this was a fun list to compile, I would avoid these songs on February 14th if you are planning a romantic evening. Any other day of the year, crank them up and enjoy. Perhaps on a really bad day they will provide you with a musical means to relieve some stress. Or at least give you some wonderful visions of how to fix the bad day!

That's a sad topic! I guess those who are 'love-less' or recently dumped need some songs!

Hands-down, the Alanis song out-does all songs! Yikes...I really like that song, though! Great list you put together!
