Top 10 New Apartment Needs

Everyone forgets something when moving into an apartment. Here are the top ten things to have when you're moving into a new place.

New Apartment Need #1 - Toilet Paper
Fact of life, you're going to forget toilet paper, then when you're settling in for the night at your new apartment, you'll suddenly realize at the most inopportune time that you don't have any toilet paper. Try to buy a cheap roll before you move so you won't have to worry about it!

New Apartment Need #2-3- Dishes, Silverware
Whether they're glass and metal or paper and plastic, you'll be glad you have something to eat on. If you already have these things from a previous home, then you won't have to worry. If you don't but the budget's tight, go with paper/plastic, and when you have a little extra take a trip to a neighborhood thrift store, and see what you can find - they offer great prices.

New Apartment Need #4- Dish Soap
Once you have real dishes, you'll need to wash them. A small bottle of dish soap will save you from that awkward moment when all your dishes are dirty and you want a bowl of cereal! A sponge to wash the dishes with is a good idea, too.

New Apartment Need #5-7 - Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap
Anything you keep in the shower, you're going to need in your new place. Sounds simple, but it's very easy to toss a bar of soap that's too slimy to pack and move and just forget to purchase a new one before you're moved in.

New Apartment Need #8- Shower Curtain
By far the one I run into the most is that you forget there's no curtain up in the shower, until you go to take one. Most dollar stores have very cheapo shower curtains to tide you over, but if you can I suggest you find a heavier one, since the light ones will billow inward when you take a shower. If you have shower doors, you're lucky and won't need to remember this one!

New Apartment Need #9- Laundry Detergent
Something people rarely move with are laundry supplies, like detergent and dryer sheets or fabric softener. Luckily, they're easily accessible, not terribly expensive, and you might be able to stretch your clothes for a while until you need to wash them. Another thing to keep in mind is whether your new place has coin-operated laundry, because if so you'll need to stock up on quarters!

New Apartment Need #10- Pet Supplies
I know my cat would be unimpressed to get to her new house and find that she had no food, water, or litter box ready for her. It's a good idea to set these up before you bring your pet in so that they know where it's going to be - routine helps them settle in, just like it does for us.

Jennie, thanks for this. My son just moved closer to school with a group of buddies.

Great ideas for anyone planning on moving soon! I also make sure I have lots of cleaning supplies like toilet bowl cleaner, disinfecting wipes, etc. Even though your new apartment might seem clean when you pick up the keys, you never really know it’s sanitized until you clean it yourself!
